View Full Version : Amelia Reid Aviation closing at RHV

Hi,

A landmark. Given that the airport is called Reid-Hillview Airport... It
sure will be sad to see it go. The planes are in excellent condition and
the FBO has a real old feel about it.

I think I might just head down there this weekend and log some time in a
Citabria...

It sure will. I wonder how long it will be before the whole airport
is closed once Amelia Reid Aviation is gone.

Thankfully there are a lot of thriving FBO's at Reid-Hillview Airport, so I
don't see the airport disappearing because Amelia's closed. Having said
that, Amelia's is THE 'cornerstone' of the history of the airport. I will
always recall walking off to my lesson (when I was working on my PPL at an
FBO that is cattycorner/across the street from Amelia Reid Aviation) and
watching Amelia heading off to teach an advanced aerobatics lesson with her
seat cushions in-hand.

I had been hoping against hope that Robin and Marici could find someone who
would be willing to keep the FBO open - but I guess not.

It will be missed by all of us at the airport.

Are there? I know for a fact about at least one other FBO that isn't 100%
sure about its continued operation.

My memories of Amelia are of her dancing late into the evening with more
energy than the youngsters, and a bigger smile than anyone could have.

I took my tailwheel 'checkride' with Robin - a very nice guy. Kinda strange
making a 747 Captain climb into the back of a Citabria! :)

Any idea what is going on? Is it the economy and people aren't spending on
luxuries, or is it because there are less foreign student pilots, or both?

Tradewinds seems to be doing fine (heck they are getting new resurfacing in
their tie-down area as we speak), Squadron2 doesn't seem to show any signs
of needing to close (just as an 'outsiders' observation, of course, for the
latter two FBO's - no 'inside' knowledge) and Nice Air continues to do fine
(which I know for a fact). There is an FBO American Aviation or some name
like that which is adjacent to the 'complex' that The Airport Shopee that
I'm not too sure of (i.e., how it is doing). Seems things should be just
fine, is there an FBO that I'm not aware of?

I'll bet he enjoyed that the most! :0). Both Robin and Marici are both
genuinely nice people.

Bite your tongue,,, flying is essential to life and well-being,,, not a
luxury! :0)

I'm sure it could be a little of all those things. Gas prices soaring sure
didn't help things as well as the TSA 'hoops' foreign students have to jump
through. However, Amelia's is probably closing because Robin and Marici
have a family and other life to live and running Amelia's takes a lot of
their time and energy. Hardly a day will go by at their FBO when I see one
of them running back and forth to do the things that need to be done to keep
a business running.

Just a guess. Otherwise the operation itself seems to be constantly busy
with students.

They sure are. More often than not when I was getting my TW endorsement, it
was difficult to schedule a Citabria, and my CFI had numerous Private
students which surprised me - tailwheel certainly wasn't my first choice
when I started. I thought it was great how this 'tailwheel' school had
planes in excellent condition and their planes and CFIs are kept really
busy.

It sure will be sad to see it go, but I can understand the reason.
