Visiting NYC

I am flying in from London to spend a long weekend in NYC in February.
I was wondering whether anyone could recommend anywhere where I can get a
plane and instructor to me take up the Hudson and do the sights.

I don't want to have to travel too far out of the city if possible as the
family do not want me hijacking the trip with flying.

There's at least one flight school at Teterboro airport, next to Million
Air FBO, that I would suspect also provides scenic rides up the Hudson.
KTEB is just over the river from NYC in New Jersey. Here's the airport
page at Airnav, scroll down for the FBO numbers and call Million Air
first to see if they are the ones with the flight school:

For about US $ 7.00 per person, you could take the train from Penn
Station, connecting at the Hoboken, NJ, station and be there in about 45
minutes (from Penn).

Or, for $2.60 or so per person, you could take the NJ Transit #161 bus
out of Port Authority Bus Station and be at Teterboro in about 30
minutes (typical traffic assumed). Here's the bus schedule:

In either case, you would have to contact the FBO about 15 minutes out
to have them meet you at the bus or train stop. Million Air provided
this service for free when I traveled there over the summer, but I would
tip the driver US $5 or so.

I would be very surprised if none of the flight schools there offered
this scenic trip, but I have never been there to confirm. To get to
this airport, you would need to take a train north out of Penn Station,
but the trip is probably an hour one way to the train stop, then a 10
minute cab ride to the airport.

The scenic flight is incredible (I have done it in my own aircraft four
times now) and you are wise to attempt this while you are in NYC.

I should have included that if you wanted to take a NY Yellow cab door-
to-door, you will have to negotiate a price with them. They do not use
the meter. I have gotten there for about $50 plus tip and tolls (12
more).

You could also travel in style and take a car service door-to-door
(there are lots of them). They will provide a Lincoln Town Car for
about $85 one way.

You could also take the train (Hudson Line) north from Grand Central
to White Plains, then take a cab from the train station to Westchester
Co. airport.

There's a flight school or two there that would take your money.

And if none of those work, there's always Islip (ISP) out on Long Island.
It's a bit more of a trip to get to than HPN but still in the range for a
1-day journey. I believe the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) which departs Penn
station in NYC has a stop that isn't too far away and you could get a cab to
the field. Or you could just rent a car for the day.

I'll put in my two cents for Panorama. I flew down there from Boston in my
172 and they took good care of us with nothing more than 20 gallons of
100LL. All the other places at HPN won't pay you the time of day unless
you're burning kerosene. Funniest thing though, I saw they put Denver boots
on all the jets- they said it's to make sure they pay for their fuel! As Liz
Smith used to say, "Only in New York, kids, only in New York..."

That gets my vote. I regularly fly to KTEB and park at Million Air. The
school is right next door. (I sometimes buy charts there.) You can even
walk from the bus stop. I usually do. It's about a mile. The stop is at
the threshold of 19. The road runs parallel to 06 - 24. Go to aopa.org and
look at a taxiway diagram for KTEB. You should be a member... Just book a
lesson. The Hudson is surprisingly friendly airspce once you get used to
the frantic ATC traffic. (You're in class G or E) but you can't get much of
anywhere unless you deal with them.

My neighbor runs Liberty Helicopters (http://www.libertyhelicopters.com/)
that fly out of the heliport next to the Intrepid air museum. If you only
want a quick look aroung the area from the air, they can help without you
having to leave Manhatten. OTOH, the flight's pretty sort unless you spend
big $$'s.

An alternative, if possible, would be to contact me by phone when you're in
town (demung my e-mail address, send me yours, and I'll send you my phone #)
and if the weather's OK perhaps we can go up in my Archer. I'm always
looking for an excuse to go flying. I like flying the Hudson corridor,
although it's a couple of hours flight by the time I get there from KSMQ and
return.

What part of London are you from? I did my MSc and PhD in Cardiff in the
70's. My children are named Gareth, Gwyneth and Gethyn as a result.

One of my good memories is being stuck in traffic right in the middle
of the GWB the weekend before Christmas, in a limo with the slide roof
wide open... The music was on (Dvorac's New World Symphony), the
champagne was world class in a fluted glass, the companion was warm,
willing, and perfumed... The vfr traffic was only a few hundred feet
above us and a Cessna 310 came floating by with a notch of flaps down,
and the engines barely above idle... It was a Bearcat conversion with
those IO-550's just rumbling away, like a Deuce Coupe with a blown Hemi
.... At that instant guess where I wanted to be? Ah jeez, ya gotta be
crazy to love airplanes...

Think this is some silly security law in that area since 9-11 that
requires an aircraft to have double locks. No ignition key on a jet.
They do the same at HPN.
