They are making a big budget movie with Shawn Penn about the guy who
tried to crash a Cessna into the White House during the Nixon years.
Just what GA needs. Hopefully, they will show how it essentially
bounced off the windows.

Given Hollywood's penchant for sensationalism, your hope isn't likely
to be realized.

I wasn't able to locate information about the incident to which you
referred, but here's another that occurred in 1994:

I can always hope..... but being 'Hollywood', I expect it will let go an
explosion the size of 20 of our suns <g>..... oh yes,,, and the wings will
shred concrete and steel with ease with special effects showing the plane,
cascading down hallways and through doors, people running down hallways out
in front of the path of the plane....... Hollywood will never let the facts
get in the way of a sensationalistic story...... I still hope they will
try to get the facts right,,, but I am skeptical.... :(

As I remember, the guy did a lawn dart on the West Lawn, and some
pieces fetched up against the wall... It wasn't much of a crash, but
I agree that Hollywood will have it equal to a Bimini 100 megaton
H-bomb...

..... or even worse... because they know how little damage would actually
occur, they will cut the film short of the plane actually crashing, the
camera zooming in on the ever widening eyes of the pilot as he over controls
first one way then the next, the airspeed quickly climbing and the whine of
the engine growing while he croaks out one last anti-government utterence
leaving the speculation, shock, and awe to develop to a feverish pitch in
the minds of an unaware infuential audience.

The fireball! Don't forget the fireball! And the heroic SS agent who runs
ahead of it screaming with the strain!

And the overhead shot of DC with the shock wave spreading out and flattening
buildings for miles!

We also need to have the Cessna badly damaged from bullets fired by Air
Force F-18s and shrapnel from Stinger missiles fired by the SS.

And the motivation will have to be protest over Nixon starting the war in
Vietnam. Or maybe his deployment of SDI or even orbital mind control lasers.

Are you sure of the aircraft type? A report on White House security lists only
the landing of a stolen helicopter on the grounds by Robert Preston and the
attempt by Samuel Byck to hijack an airliner and crash it into the White House.
The latter incident would certainly make an excellent movie, even if they didn't
hype it up. The only referral to a Cessna crash I can find is the one during the
Clinton administration.

The scene will be no more inaccurate than the crash in "The Aviator," and we
all loved that movie.

Well, if we are going to critize something let's at least know what we are
talking about. The movie was about Samuel Byck who tried to hijack a
commercial airliner to crash into the White House. The Cessna incident
happened to Bill Clinton.

It is a completly fictionalized account of the Samuel Byck attempt. (if you
can call it an attempt.

Samuel Joseph Byck (1930 - February 22, 1974) was an unemployed tire
salesman who attempted to hijack a plane from Baltimore-Washington
International Airport on February 22, 1974. He intended to crash into the
White House in hopes of killing U.S. President Richard M. Nixon. Byck shot
and killed one of the pilots on the DC-9 Delta Airlines Flight 523, wounded
another, then grabbed a nearby passenger and ordered her to "fly the plane".
He was shot and wounded through the cabin door by police during the attempt
and committed suicide; a gasoline bomb was found under his body.
Subsequently, it was discovered Byck had sent a tape recording detailing his
plan to news columnist Jack Anderson, and a review of records disclosed that
Byck had been arrested protesting in front of the White House, dressed in a
Santa suit, the previous December.

Byck had first come to the notice of the Secret Service in 1972, when he had
first threatened Nixon, whom he had resented ever since the Small Business
Administration had turned him down for a loan. Byck had also sent bizarre
tape recording to various other public figures including Jonas Salk, Abraham
Ribicoff, and Leonard Bernstein.

I just realized that I am mixing up the two incidents. When NPR said,
"crash a plane into the White House", I remembered the Cessna incident
and transferred it back to the Nixon years they were talking about.

Yup, I stand corrected as acknowledges above.

Oh the horror!, to go down in web history as the first person ever to
post a mistaken piece of information in a newsgroup. How will I ever
live this down?

I thought Kris Kristofferson (sic) landed a helicopter on the White

Accuracy, that's a pipe dream. I prefer to place my dreams on a horrible
accident during production that gives Penn his own "lifetime achievment
award.".
