Not that it is a lavish use of bandwidth, but more to do with most
news servers automatically dropping any articles with binaries, unless
it is a binary specific group. Best thing to do is post it either in
the appropriate binaries group or on a website and point to it. That
way anyone that wants to see it can do so, and those that don't,
won't.
Also, remember that although more and more people in the US are on DSL
or cable connections, most of the rest of the world isn't, and some
have to pay by the time connected to the ISP. When you drop in a 1
meg binary, that's equivalent to about 100 regular text messages.
