Hello all you iPAQ geniuses(?)...
I have two iPAQ , 3955 and a 3970.
The problem is I am unable to get either one to read any (3) SD cards, which make me think it is an operator error (the card is inserted into a slot on top of the PDA).
I would find 'storage card' under 'My Device' when using my older 3100 series iPAQs, but no such thing using the 3900 series.
Two different iPAQs and 3 different SD cards have failed to allow access to the storage card.
Looking for ideas , I want to use the devices to load waypoints into a 302 and retrieve flight logs. I understand a laptop can be use, I am simply trying to solve this riddle for now.
The one who solves this riddle will get bragging rights.
Thanks,
R

Are the SD cards modern, large capacity, ones?

Hello Henry, KG @ SLGP. I use a iPAQ 3955 with Nav 11 and download my flight. use file explorer > then my Device > storage card should be under iPAQ File Store. It that fails try reset on bottom of your iPaq. feel free to contact me if that does not help.

Sometimes the older systems will not be able to read a larger capacity sd card. I don't see what size you are using but try no greater than 2GB. They are harder to find in retail stores but available on ebay etc.

Just to confirm what others are saying, the iPAQ 3955 and 3970 only read/write MMC and the original "Secure Digital" (SD) cards, which topped out at 1 GB. I believe there was a firmware update that allowed use of certain 2 GB cards. SDHC, SDXC, etc., cards with larger capacity don't work. There is also a formatting issue, I don't think the newer exFAT format is supported in any capacity card.

One card is a SanDisk 16 GB and the others are 1024 MB (micro).
I looked under iPAC File Store and get only a blank page.
OOOOhhhhhh , I can feel we are getting close....
This is better than the Nationals...
Several of you feel I need to start with a small capacity card.
Yes??????

Oh...yes , the cards are new modern less than two years.

Here you go, see link below. Can't go wrong;

OK....just got off the phone with KG who has the same unit as me and he said the only cards that work are the one with 7 contacts on the back and all my cards have 9. He tried the 9 in his and no werkie, but the seven do. So, I'll get a seven contact card and see what happens.
I will post the results and with any luck, announce if we have a winner in the iPAC Nationals.
I know y'll knew the answer.
Thanks
Lets hope for the fat lady to sing.

Interesting. I have used and still have in my possession a 3850 as well as had a3970 before I switched to PNS's and both worked fine with the same 9 contact sd cards. I didn't even know a 7 existed. My ignorance?

OK,,,more mystery.....I found a 32 MB 9contact card (not MMC) that does work. So...not sure what the limit is base on ...contacts vs. memory size....maybe both....
Many of you mentioned memory size so all of you win bragging rights and I will be able to sleep soundly without cussing out the f..k..g Chinese.
Thanks a million.

Hope you got it sorted out.
I understand your need for a ipaq to communicate with your CAI 302 via the CAI Utility software.

I'm a 302/303 user.

That said when the ipaq's completely fail look into a Oudie 2 with seyoumobile.

Great device and software and you can, presently, load turnpoints into your 302 and download you flight file from your 302 with a Oudie.
It is easy upload your flight to the OLC or a contest with the Oudie.
The Oudie also logs another flight log in case your 302 file is bad for any reason.
The one thing the Oudie won't do is handle the CAI Utility. We 302 / Oudie users need to ramp up the pressure on Naviter to allow the CAI Utility to run on the Oudie and then it will be the perfect device to couple with a 302.
You can communicate the settings to a 302 with a 303 thou and this is the way I change settings in my 302 when I don't have my ipaq [ which is on life support] handy
Happy landings

No, if it has 9 contacts and a write protect switch it is an SD card of some type. MultiMedia Cards (MMC) have the same outline, are noticeably thinner, only 7 contacts, and no write-protect switch

Meant to add:

The difference between the various types of SD cards is some register changes and disk format, the original SD (SDSC) standard cards use FAT16 format with 512 byte block allowing 1 GB total capacity. A later revision of SDSC allowed 1024 or 2048 byte blocks, extending capacity to 2GB and 4GB, not all iPAQs were updated to support these larger block sizes. SDHC uses FAT32 format allowing up to 32 GB, SDXC uses exFAT allowing up to 2 TB, HP never updated the firmware to allow these formats.

Be carefull when introducing the SD card.
The inboard reader is prone to fail for mechanical reasons, and the result is just the same as a non compatible SD.
And of course, it is nearly impossible to repair.

A lot of units sold on ebay have the SD reader broken.

Snip; "The Oudie also logs another flight log in case your 302 file is bad for any reason" -just about all software utilized today will do that..
WinPilot will work with CAI Utility. I think it is still the best software out there, SeeYouMobil (Oudie) is a sort of a poor copy and costs the most. The problem with WP is that there is no support, you are stuck with their aviation database which is almost two years out of date.
One of the best IMO is XCSoar which by the way is free and works like a charm.
LK8000 is good too (also free) from what I understand.

I am always amaze at the level of knowledge available on RAS and how little I know. My two iPAC 9100 series both worked with the 302 with no issues and I have no clue why the junkie 3100 failed to do so, but now I do not care.
I thank everyone for all the help. I use the iPAC to load waypoints and retrieve flight logs (back-up) to my 302 which is my navigation backup to my ClearNav.
So , this panel is a bit beyond Oudie. If I add anything else I will need to mount a Honda generator on the Turtle deck.
Right now I'm up to 14 megawatts.

Mr. Hoult has won the iPAC Nationals and a place in the Hall of Fame. Sorry KG. He was the first to mention "Card size".
