The May 2004 issue of Kitplanes has an article entitled; 'Flying the
Mosquito: Maximum fun at minimal cost'

Economical? ~ The kit helicopters sells for $19.000.00 (US).
Reliable? ~ The positive article is written by Ken Armstrong. He has flown
12,000 hours on 250 airplane and helicopter types, and is a prominent
Canadian aviation author whose works are regularly published in a number of
aviation periodicals.

I'm not sure why the Mosquito is so expensive. Doesn't the helicycle
cost around the same thing?

As I understand it, the Helicycle with it's turbine engine is in the
neighbor hood of $35,000

Yes, that is the turbine version. I'm not sure if it is still an
option, but the original 2 cycle was about $20-$25K. I would
personally prefer a Wankel on there. The newer ones are lighter and
produce more HP than the turbine.

I check Helicycles web site from time to time out of curiosity. Near as I
can tell, it's the 2 cycle engines have gone the way of the dinosaur. I
don't get the impression that Helicycle is considering their use "at all"
anymore.

It makes sense in the long run. About the only negative for the turbine is
fuel burn. Everything else seems to be nothing but an improvement.

Dave: It has been determined by the majority of helicopter owner/operators
that the use of the word economical in the same sentence, paragraph, page,
book or story should be cause for the activation of a B.S.filter. Unless of
course the subject helo is used as a static display.

Even worse. The word 'economical' was located in the vicinity of the word
'reliable'. :)

John's craft isn't going to make it on the merit of its good looks.
Hopefully it is reliability, and this will help resurrect recreational
helicopters from the ashes of those that have come and gone.

Just a related thought.


If the Mosquito [ http://www.innovatortech.ca/ ] proves over time to be
reliable, it may open the door for the FAA to include helicopters in the US
Sport Pilot & Light-Sport Aircraft category.
This will give the Americans a category very similar to the new European
JAR - Very Light Rotorcraft one.
