What's the difference between a Fairy Tale and A Flying Tale?
A Fairy Tale begins "Once upon a time..."
A Flying Tale begins "No ****, this is a true story..."

John, John, John... I flew in from Minneapolis, VFR no less, and you had
to drive from Des Moines? What's up with that? :-)

Tall people get nervous scud-running. Too much negative conditioning bumping
their heads, a problem I've never had. (John is roughly 1.7 Stellas in height)
OTOH, after a day driving under the overcast, we arrived just in time for the
clouds to clear and watched the lunar eclipse from Highflyer's hangar!

Seems to me I'm taller than Oysterhouse. Next excuse??? :-)

Hey, John, looking at the forecast it appears like you've ordered up the
traditional stationary front to the north of the fly-in again all
weekend. Right between me and there. How do you manage to get it
consistently on that weekend every year? :-)

Brave words from someone who is *driving* in to PJY!
:-)
We tried to fly there today, right after lunch. Got thirty miles out, and
had to turn back.
And if we had made it, we'd never have made it back -- it's been storming
all evening.
NASTY weather around here of late...

That's all we've had here... ever since last Sunday when the ceiling

We had nearly 4 inches of rain in the first half of the week and now
we're trying to do it again.
So far we've reached our years average allotment in less than 6
months. Lower Michigan is definitely no longer considered a drought
area.

And it gets even nastier a little farther north.
Welll... It's after 6 AM and another storm is coming through. I think
it's time to give up and go to bed.

Due to flash flooding, some folks in the
Kansas City area could not drive anywhere.
Some neighborhoods had over 7 inches of rain in
less than 4 hours in the wee hours before daylight.

You can add another inch and a half for last night. Actually 1.52
since in the last 16 hours . One storm was putting out an inch in 15
minutes, but fortunately that was the duration of the storm.
I'd only been in bed about an hour when a really active/noisy storm
woke me. I was shutting down the computers when my tower took a hit.
One coax cable that goes to the 440 array at 130 feet (the array is
grounded) had a bright blue arc and cracked like a pistol shot. It
shut my network down, but the connections came right back up.
BTW that is the second hit this week. It usually takes an average of
three per summer. I think that last one was number 4 for this year.
When I went to feed the cats (as I was already up), I found them all
hiding in the basement. My big old cat who chases dogs is afraid of
thunderstorms.

They had that down in the Detroit area too. (120 miles south of us)
Fortunately the tornados and really heavy rain have been to the south
of us.
OTOH for total rain fall in lower Michigan the map shows us in the
center of it, but I don't think that covers the storm that dumped so
much in Detroit.

Money!
Actually that is not all that far off. <:-)) I have a network of 32,
or 33 (I've lost count) 8' ground rods, CadWelded (TM) to over 600
feet of bare #2 copper wire. All antennas operate at DC ground tied
to the tower. Each coax (there are 7 of them... I think) goes through
a PolyPhaser (TM) arrestor.
http://www.rogerhalstead.com/ham_files/ground.htm
and
http://www.rogerhalstead.com/ham_files/tower.htm
and
http://www.rogerhalstead.com/ham_files/cablebox.htm
Each computer is on its own UPS with line conditioning and filtering
for the network Cat 5 cable. The DSL cable comes in through a filter
as well.
The one neighbor told me there were three strikes almost
simultaneously. One on my tower, one on a pine tree about a 100 yards
East and one to a power pole just up the street to the north.
The Neighbor to the north lost both his TV set and VCR. I see they
are out by the road for trash pickup in the morning. The pine tree
literally exploded. There are pieces that weigh 6 or 7 pounds stuck a
half foot in the ground as far as 60 feet from the tree. At least
they missed the guy's windows.
