So, would I have to be insane to buy a complete BD5-B kit? I still remember the
outrageous performance claims when the ads first appeared.

What do people use for engines? (I think I can lay my hands on a Czech MiG APU
and I have a buddy who is an expert on the Formula Mazda engines).

Why not buy juan's? It's been "almost complete" for years. He's also been
trying to sell it for years. I bet you can get a fabulous deal.

If Jaun had ANYTHING to do with it, NO Deal would be good enough!

Hey Dan. Isn't his jet? I guess the difference is I can find a complete B kit
for $1500 or so. There is a template to foam and cover the upper wing surface
to change the airfoil and tame the stall that only adds about seven pounds.

They still look pretty cool and I have seen Hirth powered BD-5Bs with about 60
hp that cruise 180 and top out at 200+. They are pretty light and I wonder if
you take a beating on cross country.

Yes, it's a BD-5J if it exists. I was being facetious, I wouldn't trust juan
with anything more complicated that a Nerf™ ball.

Anybody here flown one? They were praised as great flyers (descriptions as
glowing as those by Vans RV pilots) in the 70's and 80's.

There are a lot of kist around and partials but I never see finished flying
planes. I have assumed it is because there was never a good powerplant
solution.

I flew the Truck-A-Plane "simulator" once (ONLY once!)

Jeez! To simulate a landing that contraption must have been going 80 mph. Gulp.

Not quite. Probably around 60 though.

That close to the ground with that big Dodge right behind you?
What a rush!

The rig allowed for a limited amount of angular misalignment -
(side to side), so staying in front of the truck was critical.
(and you have no rear view mirrors either, so the truck driver
actually had to stay behind the airplane!)

IIRC, that's what finally happened to it. Some multi-thousand
hour glider pilot let it get to far to one side and rolled the
entire rig...

Those were the glory days at Newton.
