On heavier gliders like the 304eS, LAK-17B FES and Ventus 2cxa FES, the FES would normally be used as a sustainer. On lighter gliders it can be used to self-launch such as on the Silent 2 Electro...

I wonder if it would be possible to use a single blade prop (yes, they exist, look it up) and have it stored in a recess under the nose when stopped, to minimize drag.

That would be a bit more complicated (for the door to cover the prop) but would probably make the FES more acceptable to hard-core racers.

FESBPS, anyone?

There are several dynamics issues with the single blade prop that would require a lot of effort to resolve if you are to be able to fold and stow the single blade (counterbalance weight, and where will it go?). Might be easier to stick with the two blades and stow them in recesses in the nose, similar to big wipers. Or, as you suggested, inside doors. for the hardcore racers.

Plus, no ground clearance issues to take off, always keep the blade up!
