I thought the Lancaster was a single pilot plane. Was there a copilot for
the extra controls?

war time Lancs were single, but from what I could find, the Battle of
Britian memorial Lanc is fitted with a linked control column,
as were some of the training lancasters..

Thanks for the info. Makes sense that you would need extra controls for
training.

The wartime Lancaster was flown single-pilot, with a folding jump seat
where the Flight Engineer sat for take-off and landing, handling the
engine controls.

Post-war, a second, linked control column was added, for search and
rescue and maritime patrol flights.

Both flying Lancasters - the CWH and the BBMF - are flown with a
copilot.

Here is a link to the CWH aircraft cockpit. You can see the folded
jump seat on the right side. The pilots tell me that the minimal
padding of the seat limits the flight length! <G>
