....copyright 2007 by Bill Geist; ISBN 978-0-7679-2272-2; subtitle "Discovering
the Peculiar Charms of Small-Town America" in which - among other charms - is
the chapter entitled, "The Alien Highway: Rachel, Nevada" which begins:

"Rachel, Nevada: only place I ever had a gun drawn on me; only place I ever
had breakfast with a space alien." Turns out the gun was drawn by Joe Travis,
the non-distaff proprietor-side of the Little A'Le'Inn. It came about like this...

"Joe, popping his seventh beer and sliding another (seventh - RFW) to me, is
getting worked up. "You're too stupid to realize that the Rhodes Scholar
program is a training ground for leaders of the New World Order!"
" 'What?' I reply. And when he re-shouts his statement I retort, slowly and
emphatically, 'You . . . are a complete . . . f---ing . . . idiot!'
"To which Joe responds by reaching beneath the bar and pulling a gun on me. A
six-shooter if I recall correctly. Which I have to say, did win me over to his
way of thinking."

Geist took over for on CBS TV for Charles Kuralt, I believe, after C.K. passed
away. Melody got the book from the library, and it's a thoroughly enjoyable
road trip all by itself. I've been to a number of places mentioned in the
book...as have you to at least one!

Well, geez - obviously this was intended to go elsewhere, but it's still a
good read, even if there's nothing about soaring in it (though the 2nd chapter
involves flying, and not very far from both Minden and Air Sailing!)...
