Perhaps, but I know of one case where the turbo in a Discus BT erected itself in a severe frontal impact that destroyed the cockpit (a winch launch cartwheel)

Pretty sobering how severe the destruction of the fwd fuselage is. Best wishes to the pilot for a full recovery.

Let's hope the pilot recovers well.

Could be damage from releasing the pilot post crash.

I'm guessing it's region 4 south, last name & type match to a contestant.
Hope the reporting is worse than the actual situation.

That the increase in workload associated with deploying a turbo causes
accidents (bad accidents) when the pilot is also trying to conduct the
flight or circuit at low level.
I am sorry, it was a somewhat over-reaction spurred on by my dislike of
turbos. I think they are dangerous because of the poor operating design of
most. Glider workshops are full of them.
I too hope the pilot recovers well.

So why are turbo insurance rates cheaper?

I don't think it makes any difference if you hit a power line with a pure glider, or a turbo, or a self launch. You are still in a world of trouble at that point.

Of course it makes. If he hit the power lines while trying to start the engine or as a result of the engine not starting than it made all the difference in the world. I am not saying this was the case, just that it could be the case. Additional workload at a critical time is a receipt for tunnel vision.

From looking at the flight log carefully, and seeing it depicted in 3D,it is clear he was trying to be as low as he could over the last obstacles before a difficult field and missed seeing the wires. I do not think the turbo had any affect, other than not starting as he had hoped shortly before.

Looking at Google earth it seems that there were good/better fields down in the valley. Perhaps left decisions to the last moment?

When will the flight trace be shared? Or is it available?
I know that some have already seen it.

Hey Frank, thanks for sharing. While I sorta remember the pilot, I have family that really does.
Hope the best for Wharton, speedy recovery, good luck in the future, whatever it brings.....

While the accident clearly damaged the glider, the extraction of the pilot
by rescue crews could have easily resulted in the complete disassembly of the forward fuselage around him.
I.M.H.O.,compared to a typical auto extrication a sailplane would be akin to peeling a hard boiled egg.
God bless and a speedy recovery.
