View Full Version : Why aren't bars more common at US soaring sites?

Dan's post below regarding auto tows opens the door for another cool-weather wind-up.
Clubs about everywhere else are well stocked with beer and wine.
In Moriarty, there's a brewery not far off the airport.
In Tehachapi the brewery is closer to the municipal airport.
But what about on-site?

Hmmmm....lack of bars and breweries on soaring sites is probably why we don't do much auto towing and why our Junior pilots aren't competitive. Nothing like a good Martini on those windy marginal days.

My club in NZ has always had a bar in the clubhouse. The store room is locked until the towplane is put away.

Bruce,
Adult beverages are consumed at our club too, but as you said, only after the towplanes are put away and the hangar door is closed.

Because US soaring sites are not in Ireland nor are they yachting clubs :)

Plenty of bars in glider clubs in the UK, even RAF clubs. At Enstone, the bar and clubhouse was the upper floor of the old control tower. It was a source of revenue. I tended bar regularly and during two nationals. We also had light snacks. The bar did not open until the fleet was secured or the evening. At RAF clubs, us Yanks had to be wary of 'spin checks', 'follow me', 'three-man lift', and 'battleship'. All in good fun, of course. Nice bars at Bicester and Cotswold's also. Essex & Suffolk (when at Whatfield) had a nice village pub, though we occasionally retreated to a couple of others. My club has used 3-4 establishments over the years, but it's not the same as an active club food and beverages activity.

....and if I remember correctly, a required piece of bar equipment is a high stool equipped with stick and rudder pedals for on-the-spot sobriety checks!

Rule#1 - Bar doesn't open until all gliders are home and accounted for...

We don't have a bar at Moriarty, but I have a well-stocked fridge in the
hangar. I don't need to wait for "all gliders". In fact, I pop a cold
one /_before_/ putting my ship to bed. Makes the work seem much less
tedious. Then, put a chair out on the tarmac in the shade and watch the
late flyers come home. ;-)

I belong to a Yacht Club that has figured it out - They have no boats or anything that could possible float - only a really nice Bar with a great view of the bay!!
