Today is the Kansas Kowbell Klassic. Free Distance contest, whoever lands furthest away from Sunflower wins.

This should take you to the tracking page for Sunflower: http://glideport.aero/map?p=GlidePort:389

Winning distances in the past 53ish years have ranged from about 3 miles to a little over 550. Today will probably be somewhere in between that.

On a serious note, today is the memorial service in California for Henry Combs, the free distance aficionado who logged 200 straight out diamond distance flights. Hopefully Henry's spirit will be with us today and we can get a diamond distance flight or two here in Kansas.

I've got the fever and there is only one prescription...
More Kowbell!
Tony and Steve are heading downwind.

What a neat meet. I was just wondering if and how many such meets like this are available.

Steve and Andrew went into the wind and are still flying. Good cu field in Oklahoma but a big headwind. Jerry Boone and I went downwind but Jerry got shot down early in his Duster.

I made 199 miles after getting to the front, working some really weak stuff and floating into a nice farm strip.

If Steve can stay up another hour or so...it's going to be close.

Wrong! Tony is heading downwind. Steve and Andrew are going the other way.

I had longest distance with 199 miles to the northeast. Steve and Andrew both landed at Watonga, OK airport. I think Steve said about 145 miles. Jerry Boone in the Diamond Duster landed near Inman, KS, about 20 miles north.

First three flights here:

When I topped out of my last climb, the cu just started to go away. Or not work. Or both. Andrew was a bit behind me and got his last climb about where my last climb was, so maybe it was location rather than time of day that put an end to our flights? We both encountered a little lift near the airport, but both decided it wasn't going to be enough to get us higher and keep pushing forward. Made about 145 miles.

Tony forgot to mention his excellent support team in the Screaming Eagles who trailed him by only 57 minutes. Cough Cough

They got props in my OLC Comments :)

Yes, Tim & Alex, forever known now as the Screaming Eagles, did a fine job figuring out the quickest way to get to where I would eventually land. Less than an hour after touchdown they pulled in the driveway and we were soon on the road back to Wichita.

At least if the three of us ever learn to play some musical instruments and sing, we have a band name. Kate & the Screaming Eagles

Takes a bow. And we did a fine job of singing Taylor Swift

So far for the 2016 season; 13 flights and 4 diamonds straight out of Crystal, just getting started.
But than this is not a secret, just a dying breed, it has been going on for about 40 years plus.......

I very much look forward to an opportunity to get to fly with the crystal squadron. Have met many of them and been there once but only on the ground.

Long time followers of RAS will know that free distance flying is where my heart is. You just can't beat the liberation that comes along with leaving home and trying to get as far away as possible!
