I heard Arnie flew gliders (sorry sailplanes) esp the
LS6

anyone know if this is true? or of other mega celeb
type glider pilots.

The only noteworthy person I know of who is a glider pilot is Cliff Robertson.
Whether he can be considered "mega" is another issue. He is not running for
Governor of California.

I heard that David Jason (a well known actor in the
UK) flies/flew out of Dunstable.

I'd be very surprised if Arnie could fit into an LS6!

Actor Timothy Bottoms (Last Picture Show, Paper Chase)
soloed at Estrella in the '70's - I also recall hearing
soaring was a pursuit of songwriter Jimmy Webb (Up,
Up & Away, By the Time I get to Phoenix, Mac Arthur
Park et al).

John Kerry (the democratic senator from Mass. and presidential
candidate) is a glider pilot. I ran into him one day at Estrella when
I was flying a rented 1-26 and he was behind me in line in their
Pilatus B-4. He even asked little ole' me what the conditions were
like that day...(I had just landed for a re-light, which may be a
redundant statement for a 1-26!).

Actually, this is true. I hear him on the radio frequently. He flies
somewhere out of southern california and uses the call sign "Juliet
Tango" if memory serves. I think he flies an LS-3 though, because it
has a wider cockpit.

I was believing it until you said he flew an LS-3. With all his money?!?
No way.

Well there are those that invest their money and buy cheaper gliders and die
rich and happy, and then there are those that blow it all on new gliders and
die broke and happy.

I don't think Arnold Alphabet has to worry about saving money on a glider.

Now we're *really* into trivia...

The back cover of a 1960's "Soaring" magazine features the 4 co-owners of
the 300th, brand spanking new, Schweizer 1-26...one of whom is the (then
unknown) NASA test pilot and astronaut Neil Armstrong. He later partnered
in a Libelle.

Don't forget, also in the '60s, Larry Linville (Maj. Frank Burns, 4077 MASH).
Had an article in Soaring about building a glider. (Some kind of flying wing?)

I believe that the late Larry Linville was a glider pilot. He was known to
most as Major Burns on MASH.

He's got to save pennies to fuel his fleet of Hummers.

Also he probably likes the 3 because it's heavy wing panels give him a good workout.

Don't forget!

RICHARD BACH

I think he actually flew in a standard Nationals in Arizona about 23 years ago!

Richard Bach actually spent several months in the late 70's camped at
Airsailing in a large trailer. I took a picture of Dale Dye's daughter
standing next to him.

Well, Richard & Leslie spent time rambling all over
the southwest in the late '70's... at Estrella, he
often serenaded us on his keyboard as sunset faded
to dusk. (And BTW, Richard was kind enough to loan
his ASW-19 to Les Horvath for the 1978 US Standard
Class Nationals at Marana - which Les won.)

The actor was William Conrad and in the US, the TV
show was called 'Cannon.' (I thought he flew a Caproni?)

Regarding Richard Bach....

About 15 years ago, Sam Foote donated his motor glider (I believe a Scheibe
Falke SF-25) to MIT Soaring. Sam commented to me that the previous owner of
the motor glider was Richard Bach. He stated that Richard at one time flew
it across the US.

By the way, the Scheibe was the 2nd glider that the late Sam Foote donated
to MIT Soaring. The first one, a Schweizer 2-xx was in partnership with a
family member of Dennison Manufacturing (office supplies) (I believe).

PW-5? Disgusting.

In France Michel Rocard flew gliders (up to 300 km) even when he was
prime minister in the late '80s
