View Full Version : Where to go for Diamond Altitude ? U.S.

With local cloudbase rarely over 7k, I'm going to have to go somewhere
else for Diamond Altitude. I figure I might as well freeze someone
else's gelcoat so I'm looking for a commercial operation, preferably
someplace close to an airport served by Southwest Airlines.

Thanks for the advice and note that my "reply to" has a duplication in
the domain.

With wave season approaching, is there any better choice than Minden, NV?
Might as well have gorgeous scenery to go along with the frozen gelcoat.
High Country Soaring or Soar Minden will have everything you need.

Minden is a good choice. Other good choices would
be California City and Boulder. The commercial operators
all have websites you can link to from ssa.org. Bring
plenty of clothes and electric socks. Have you done
your chamber ride?

Did my Diamond at Minden last year. Nice thing about Minden, when the wave
wasn't working I went skiing, snowmobiling or gambling.

Mile High Gliding, Boulder, CO. From November to April, there are
more wave days than not. See 4 Diamond altitudes in last year's
winter SOARING issues.

In addition to the electric socks that someone else suggested, a
backup O2 bottle is a wise idea. Mtn High used to sell them for about
$100. Buying or borrowing a Nonin or other oxymeter would also be a
good idea. How else do you know your O2 is working properly? Maybe the
cost could be shared with some others.

After I went to 27,300 in wave at Minden some years back, I came back
to my club and told people about my great flight -- in short sleeves
no less -- it was July and blue and sunny. Almost to a man, they
responded "What did you do for O2 backup? Did you have a bail out
bottle?" I had to respond, "Hmmm... hadn't thought of that. Everyone
just said 'Wave's up. Get in your ships.'"

But, as I checked into useful consciousness times at those altitudes,
I realized they were right and bought the Mtn High system. Since I
have it, I keep it in the ship whenever I might need O2. Small, light
weight, and a nice redundancy.

PS to the story: The next Spring the club was planning a wave camp at
Minden and I asked "What are you doing for O2 backup?" The answer,
again to a man, "Well, we ought to have backups, but we don't, so
we'll fly anyway."

Martin,

Excellent points. And as luck would have it, I actually happen to have
a small aluminum bottle that I can use.

Lessee. Boulder, Colorado, is less than a half-hour from X/C and
snowmobiling terrain and one downhill ski resort (Eldora), and about 2
hours from Vail, Aspen, Steamboat etc. Major Casinos (Harrah's, Isle
of Capri etc.) abound at the mining towns of BlackHawk, Central City
and Cripple Creek an hour uphill. Can't or wouldn't help you about
Mustang Ranch type establishments, but Boulder itself is home to the
University of Colorado, several major Scientific institutes
(NCAR-atmospherics, NIST-standards...), quaint restaurants, new age
schools, and shopping. Denver, the "queen city of the plains" is 3/4
of an hour away with 4 pro sports franchises, a mayor that owns a
chain of brew-pub restaurants, major music concert venues, broadway
variety theatres, a symphony orchestra etc. Start on web guides at

Just FYI, Soar Miden included the bailout bottle when I was there last
winter.
