Speaking of cockpits, this one is of a Polikarpov I-16, showing the hand
crank that retracts the landing gear, on the lower right. With 45 turns
(some say 75 turns) of the crank, this tedious process meant that most of
its flight testing was done with the gear down.

Hence, the Polikarpov designers warning to the test pilots: "This is
Russia...you do not do the Polikarpov I-16...the Polikarpov I-16 does YOU."

The "flying barrel" seems to have been inspired by the Gee Bee racers. There
was a saying in Russian, "If you can fly the I-16, you can fly anything."

A big engine, with as little airframe as possible to keep it in the
air...
