I am about to send for plans and rudder "starter" kit for the CH 601. I
would be very interested in talking to
anyone flying one. I am thinking about the 6 cyl. Jab for power. I am
interested mostly in how it fly's, what it is like in a xwind and rough
air.Thanks guys.

Go to the Zenith e-mail list hosted by Matronics. www.matronics.com
There are plenty of builders on there as well as flyers. I'm building
the 601XL and it's been a good project so far. There are a few
"gotchas" that pop up on the list that definetly help with the
building process. If you get the chance attend the rudder workshop. I
did back in Nov '02 and had a great time. Also, you get a demo ride in
the plane that you're thinking of buidling. That's what finally sold
me.

I'm just about finished with the fuselage kit, wings come next week. I have
to say, the plans and photo instruction book is great. Building the kit is
straight forward, with no fancy curves/ procedures to work around. I flew
the kit plane twice and it was very responsive. It would bank quickly, but
you really had to push the stick firmly if you wanted to really horse it
around. This is great for me, it felt very stable, but could turn quickly
if you really wanted to. It was a bit pitch sensitive, but I got use to it
within the 1/2 hour intro flight. I am going to put the electric trim
switch on the stick though.
Nice kit, great support, frequent website building updates, don't need
anyone to buck riviets.

two of the local guys have built these.
they are a beautiful little aircraft to fly. in turbulence there is
the slightest tail sway due to the all flying rudder but two heavy
feet on the rudder redals dampens this out completely.
one of the chaps has the jab 6 the other the rotax.
install the jab in accordance with the manufacturers directions and
you will not have any problems. the chap initially used an over
diameter oil pipe to the cooler and this caused sufficient pump up
delay in the oil lines that he siezed a bearing. installed after
repair in the manner it should have been and the engine has been a
faultless performer.
what you will find is that the 601 is an absolutely amazing camera
platform for air to air photos. the huge bubble canopy gives an
amazing range of movement to track other aircraft.
dont have any doubts that you are building a good aeroplane.
andrew flew his across australia six times in six months to see his
girlfriend. thats about 3,000 miles per trip. never had a problem.

At 100 mph, I can think of one problem.
OTOH, it is a great little plane. Not an RV, but it doesn't pretend
to be one.

I really like it. Very stable will fly hands off, quick response and
all round easy to fly. To see how it will do in a cross wind go to

I went flying today with the new motor in my 601 XL. Wow what a
difference.
I went from the 80 HP 88ci. Harley to the 100 HP 95ci. I set some more
bite in the prop and shortened my take off by about 200 feet. The
climb out was around 900 FPM. with 85 deg. I picked up about 20 mph.
on cruise. But there is still more testing to do. I should get even
more out of it. It is like a whole new plane.
