Mea culpa, I don't have a copy of the FAR's, and a
google of ras did not produce a clear answer. Could
someone post and decipher what the initial requirements
are for a towpilot? Thanks much.

It says:
(a) No person may act as pilot in command for towing a glider unless that
person:
(1) Holds at least a private pilot certificate with a category rating
for
powered aircraft;
But should not be taken to mean that the private pilot can accept
renumeration for towing gliders.

Indeed, our club has a strict policy against tow pilot renumeration.
