I was in Robert Mudd's shop yesterday and he had a Grob 103, N928BG. He
told me that it came from Hawaii. I just looked in my log book and
found that it was the first glider I ever flew!

My brother took me to Dillingham Field and introduced me to Elmer and,
after talking a while, he gave me the controls and just sat back while I
did the takeoff, tow, ridge flying (with his suggestions), pattern and
landing. I was so thrilled that I came back the next day and flew the
2-33 with with him and, on my 6th glider flight, soloed! What a blast
from the past.

The date was April 13, 1986 and I haven't looked back.

Dan,
Now that you have made me feel really old, mine was on August 17, 1973 at North Conway NH in an "new" SGS 2-33 N1227S. She seemed really sleek next to the dodgy old 2-22 that was there (with it's pellet vario and cloth wing). I soloed N1227S 21 lessons later in October of that year. I never flew an airplane until many years later - when I learned because I was teaching power pilots to fly gliders and needed to understand their skill set. I think 27S is down in PA somewhere, still doing her job.
