Keith Willis of Big Pond, South Austrailia, obviously enjoys flying his
Smyk PW5 -----

Early this month, flying my PW5 reached a total of 1000 hrs. I have had
283 flights that averaged of 3 hours and 33 min a flight. My x/country
flights have been 229 for 38,283 KLM, ( more than around the World ).

Regards from Keith,

ps I have flown an additional 96 hours in the last 4 weeks.

It's nice to hear news like that! :) Keep on posting them, and =
supporting this such a nice glider... :)
It's one of the nicest gliders which the beginners can meet at the =
beginning if their gliding career. :)

Regards,

Way to go Keith. Lots of Miles (KMs) for a PW5.

He flies the PW5 - so you don't have to!

Unfortunately, we don't know how many hours those 229 x-country flights
were, but since they are the vast majority of the flights they can't be
*much* more than 3h33 each.

Even if those 229 flights used up all 1000 hours, his average x-country
speed is 42 km/h, and it might be as high as 48 km/h.

That's not bad. Here in NZ my normal PW-5 x-country speeds on a good
thermal day are around 60 km/h. But to rack up that much time so
quickly he must be flying on some pretty dodgy days, which pulls down
average speeds very quickly -- I remember one local club contest day
where I got second (in a Libelle) with a 15 km/h speed, and only two of
us got more than 20 km from home!

I assume he's accepting donations for replacement cushions and
pee tubes... ;P

Charlie,
Friend of mine did 500KM triangle in Pw5 two years ago around
Chicagoland area where thermal activity is really weak and according
to some glider pilots - it doesn't exists, during 2002 season he put
200 hours on it. It is really funny to see pilots flying their top
notch asw-27, LS8 and so on and landing within half an hour after they
took off claiming that there is absolutely no lift when this guy is
gone for couple of hours and when he lands he confesses that he landed
because his butt hurts from the uncomfortable seating and that he had
plenty of altitude to waist off... Of course Pw5 cannot compete with
these gliders by any means except for the price and availability to
the normal folks that do not spend $90,000 on a glider and that was
the purpose it was designed for. Where do people get the so much anger
and fury against that glider?
Once again, if you don't like it, stay away - fly your asw-28 thinking
that you're the king of the world, but unfortunately it doesn't tell
anything about your skills.
