The Ontario Trillium Foundation, which is funded by $100,000,000 of profits
from the Ontario casinos each year, has awarded a capital grant of $75,000
to the Freedom's Wings Canada program. The funds will be used to purchase a
glider with hand controls that permit paraplegics to operate the glider.
Freedom's Wings Canada, which was inspired by Freedom's Wings International
www.freedomswings.org, is a collaborative of York Soaring Association,
www.yorksoaring.com, Youth Flight Canada (a registered charity operated by
members of York), www.youthflight.ca, K W Access-Ability (a Kitchener based
charity offering wheelchair sports), http://www.kwa.on.ca/, and the Canadian
Paraplegic Association of Ontario, http://www.canparaplegic.org/on/.
We will purchase a Peregrine, the US manufactured and US certified Krosno
http://www.peregrinesailplane.com/ , fitted with hand controls designed, and
soon to be included in the type certificate, by the manufacturer, Barry
Aviation www.barryaviation.com. These modifications consist of a 'Rudder
Stick', which allows control of the rudder using the left hand (push forward
for left rudder, and pull back for right rudder) and a modification to the
spoiler permitting the pilot to set and lock various levels of spoiler
deployment.
Freedom's Wings Canada has begun pitching various corporations, looking for
sponsorship that will pay the tows and club memberships of the student
pilots at the club where they are taking their training.
This will be a trial program, during which a training manual supplement will
be developed, and FWC will then work with other clubs to obtain similar
Trillium grants.
This initiative will bring government money and corporate money to soaring,
attract a new category of student, offer clubs additional 'ride' revenue,
memeberships, and training revenue, offer club members a very gratifiying
opportunity to do some good and some flying, and bring publicity
opportunities to our sport.
