View Full Version : Interest in a 20 Meter Multiseat Class National Contest for 2018?

June 1st 17, 12:44 AM
The SSA Rules Committee would like to gauge pilot interest in attending a potential 20 Meter Multiseat Class National Competition if it were hosted at Mifflin in 2018. The Rules Committee has determined that we need to have at least 12 confirmed entries if we are to proceed. Furthermore, time is of the essence if we are to have a chance of making this contest happen. If you would be definitely interested in attending this new National Contest, please respond to this thread or email me at as soon as possible.

Sorry to hijack your thread Bif but what about announcing and listing on the SSA Racing Calendar the other 2018 contests? I know folks have submitted applications but nothing is on the calendar. Can you please shed some light on what is going on? If you do not know who should I be bugging?

THanks

Hi Ron, there is no contest yet. The purpose of this thread is to see if we have enough interest to proceed with trying to have a contest. We need at least 12 entries to commit to attending before we can proceed to the next steps of trying to make this contest happen.

I might add that if you are a pilot interested in attending a 2018 20M Multiseat National Contest in Mifflin, that you contact other potential entrants and have them respond so that we can achieve critical mass to justify putting this on.

Thanks,

I am not interested in contest and I do not believe it is in the best interest if the SSA Contest Rules Committee to have yet another class for a Nationals competition. IF this held will take away from folks that would participate in the 2018 Sports Nationals, which are typically dominate by Duo's and Arcus'es?

Oh wait we do not know when or where the 2018 Nationals are being held, how can we plan.

IMO class creep is bad for the competition scene with the SSA. What is next the folks asking for $$ to go to the World 20 Meter competition?

It's the IGC, not SSA, that created the 20m class, due to international
interest. USA lags rest of world here.

Should not. My understanding is the USA 20m team selection criteria awards
points for 20m within sports or open as well (at least for 2016-2017).

See ya, Dave

PS: Don't forget about the up-and-coming 11m class.

Bif, the best of luck putting this together!
20m two-seater is quite a popular class internationally. It deserves a contest and records. There are about 100 20m two-seaters registered in the USA including Arcus, Duo, ASG32, DG1000. Do you think you can get a quarter of them?

What two-seater flying should be:
Check the spelling, but I think Heinz' first comment after he and Karin did their first Duo flight at Ely was:
"WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!"

YO, tell us more about the first 11m nationals. Is GBSC hosting? Will it be in February? Perhaps there's less rain then.

This class is planned to have limited handicapping with a handicap range from Arcus to abut .05 greater numerical handicap so as to try to draw Duo's, some DG 2 seaters, and possibly others.

I would love to attend in our DG-1000T. Would.consider putting a junior in the front seat for the event if he/she had enough ridge experience. I'd be in the back. 😃

I feel the 20m class is one of the best ways to develop new or beginning race pilots.

I flew with G Dale in the NZ Nationals and the 45 hours I spent in the cockpit with him were the most informative and satisfying flying I have done in my 11,000+ hours of flying. We could discuss tactics, girls, decision making, and the thought process of one of the most experienced glider pilots in the world all in real time.

I checked the results of 2016 Rules Committee survey and see that after considering all replies the Rules Committee stated they would look at holding a 2018 20 meter two place Nationals. Sorry I missed this before.

I'd be honored to bring "QQ". I'm pretty sure I'll come in DFL among all the pilots who are responding, but ... what the heck. Seems like a fun time.

Folks,

Organizers need as much interest as you can give to attending the first ever 20 meter nationals ; potentially to be held at Mifflin in May 2018.

If you have any thought of attending with a two seater let it be known to Janine !! She is getting alot of interest but needs to know how many ships may play in Mifflin.

This is a very very very fun class!!

Bif,

Heh I would reach out to Matti at USAFA on this also. I could see where the Academy might like a contest like this in some cases. I will mention it to him also.

Hope all is well! Miss seeing all you guys at Comps since I retired from USAFA. Also, I could imagine some Stemme owners could find such a contest interesting too.

Would 23 meters be accepted at a 20 meter contest?

Unfortunately, with a 200 hour inspection/overhaul requirement on the
propeller, I have to pick and choose where and when I can travel with
the ship. Maybe a trailer some day...
