We had a wonderful premiere of A FINE WEEK OF SOARING at the SSA convention.
Featuring stunning photography and an exciting storyline, the film gives an
insider’s view of the Mifflin, PA regional contest from the back seat of a
Duo Discus, with 15-time national champion Karl Striedieck at the controls.
“Whether you’re new to gliding, a beginning cross country pilot, or an old
competition soaring dog, you’ll get a heady dose of information, pleasure and
inspiration from this fine film,” says Doug Jacobs, 1985 World Champion.
A FINE WEEK OF SOARING is available on DVD, VHS and VHS PAL. Check out the web

Hi,
I love this movie. It really captures the general feel and highs and lows
of a regional contest. Well done Juan!

This film really captures the joy of soaring in general and the joy of
soaring the Pennsylvania ridges in particular. Excellent work. I even
bought a copy, and some of you know how infrequently I actually
(shudder) spend money.

I enjoyed the video, thoroughly, watched it twice and even my wife
enjoyed it. Always knew Karl was a renaissance man! (whistling
Mozart's Magical Flute, while soaring.)

This film does a great job of showing what we do and why we
do it - really conveys the fun we have. I'm buying a handful
of copies to give out to people who express interest in soaring
(along with a prepaid return-addressed envelope). We need to
bring more people into our sport to keep it from dying, and
perhaps this will help. Hope you'll consider doing the same.
Please buy a copy and please don't make illegal copies - help
Juan recover some of the considerable cost that when into this
film.
Thanks Juan, and we're hoping you'll do more !
Best Regards, Dave "YO"

How many competition pilots will now be whistling while they fly?

Overall a great movie. It has encouraged me to expand my collection
of glider movies (of which this is the first). As a new-to-soaring
pilot, it was very informative to see exactly how a competition is run
(I haven't yet convinced my family that spending a week in Mifflin to
watch the competition is an ideal vacation destination). Also I was
surprised with the quality of the video - it's definitely something
that you can show your non-soaring friends (I'm planning on showing it
to a few coworkers today over lunch).
My other quick thoughts:
The soaring in the snow shower scenes were spectacular. I was a
little surprised to see on video exactly how close to the cloud
bottoms the glider was (I've been that close before but I didn't put
it on tape :)
I know the whistling has been a topic of discussion lately. I was
more impressed with the summation of the snow experience from fellow
Pennsylvanian Karl "all that snow and crap" Striedieck.
My only minor disappointment with the video is the fact that it isn't
rated G, but likely PG due to minor swearing (actually it isn't rated
at all, but I believe that's the rating it would receive). Something
to keep in mind if you are planning on showing it to younger children
(perhaps this could be edited out in future editions?).
Charlie Spratt has a southern accent. That really doesn't come across
in Soaring magazine like it does in the video.
Overall, a great video and one that I'm sure will now contend for most
watched in our home (maybe it will even unseat current champion
"Finding Nemo" that my 3 and 5 year old enjoy so well).

Yes, I was shocked when he used the word "booby". I'm sure glad there
weren't any sensitive ears in the room then too! What's this world coming
to?
