Day 2 pilots briefing starts in 40 minutes on Wings & Wheels Facebook page. Two days ago a pilot declared an emergency shortly after takeoff. Yesterday the live feed was cut short at that pilots request when he shared the story.

Don't blame him. Facebook live is creepy. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/italian-man-base-jump-death-facebook-live-video-armin-schmieder-kandersteg-swiss-alps-switzerland-a7213816.html

Really awesome to watch live interview of Sean Fidler before the meeting talking about the difficulty and dangers of yesterday's task. 1200 to 2200 foot altitude band above the ground over unlandable terrain for more than half the task? wow!!

Bojack,
Thx. Just for clarification, I never really went below 2k but many others were well lower at times. I was working between 1800 and 2400 (top of climb) for a good 60-80 miles of 206 mile task.
It was manageable, and the ClearNAV Glide Amoeba was particularly useful in keeping track of airports and what was needed to push forward.
This was a hard task but was very fun in the sense that I was incredibly excited when I finally got into a position where I felt a sure distance day was going to be a finish. Congrats to all the pilots who finished this task. Truly impressive work!

Even 2000 feet is low enough to be very difficult to manage for most of us xc pilot amateurs. Good flying.

Daryl,
The pilots meeting live video is care of Sean Franke of Wings and Wheels (also a competitor here). Sean has build up really cool video equipment set up with a special microphone, wide angle lens (to improve quality) and tripod.
Sean has put a good deal of effort into all of this and I think we should all thank him and try and continue and expand such video coverage for SSA contests (pilots meetings, interviews, etc.). Sean also created an entire video series of all presentations at the 2016 SSA Convention (a huge investment in time, equipment and money) as well as several other recent events and contests. Sean has shown a lot of initiative and forward thinking by making this available.

Day 7 pilots briefing will have heavy discussions. Yesterday the final glide turned marginal for most with rain and sink. One didn't make it and had an encounter with local law enforcement. Others elected to continue across the finish line with low energy and altitude. Instead of crossing the finish line some elected to land straight in taking a two minute penalty. There is already hot debate on using a finish line.
Going live in 25 minutes.

3 land-outs in previous top 10.
Some of us took large reserves before final glide through rain.
I took about 2000 feet extra and used all of it for a flying finish in rain...
Challenging day!
