Has a site and date been selected yet? Nothing on SSA site.

Thanks,

At the Uvalde pilot meeting Monday 8/7/2017 Mark says they are bidding for next years, 2018, 15M and Open class Nationals. He asked about dates as they want to go later and are thinking about 8/11-20. A nine day contest with a tenth day if needed.

Watch the video on the W&W Facebook page

It is sad that the SSA has either had no bids for the 2018 15M/standard/open class or could not agree on on a bid for the.

Thank you for the information. This is not the first time that a national contest is being scheduled from Saturday to Monday. This kind of arrangement works well for local pilots but it does not work well for pilots from far away places, as it requires us to take more days off than in case of a contest that runs from Tuesday to Thursday.

Saturday-Monday 6 days off plus 1 day for Practice and 6 days for travel (3 days each way, ALL WORKING DAYS). In total 13 days.

Tuesday-Thursday contest. Prior Friday, Saturday and Sunday travel and Monday Practice. After the contest Friday, Saturday, Sunday travel back. In total 11 days.

Gents:

SSA solicits the local organizations for "bids" for contest sites two years in advance. In this day and age of multiple classes, fewer pilots driving cross-continent for an event, and fewer entrants overall, it is difficult to get the same cast of characters to continue to "volunteer" to host events that may or may not be profitable. Hence combined class events. Also, if you are asking the hosts to do the work, they have strong input into which days they are available. IF we had 40 locations vying for an event, we could be more choosy.

From the Feb 2017 SSA Board mtg., here were the events calendared and proposed at that time.

Previously Approved sites for the 2017 Nationals
Mifflin – Sports Class May 19 – 28, 2017
Hobbs – Club Class – June 20 – 29, 2017
Cordele Open, Standard & 15 Meter May 29 – June 7, 2017
Uvalde – 18 Meter - Aug 6 – 15, 2017

2018 National Status
20 Meter 2 Seater Class – Application Received from Mifflin – New Class Needs Approval
Sports Class – Application to be submitted for Nephi
18 Meter – No Bids - Bermuda High would like to host in 2019
Standard, 15 Meter – Moriarty is interested, waiting on application
Open and Club Class – No Bids at this time

We are on the threshold of our Fall 2017 BOD meeting in Dallas (Sept 9, all members welcome), where I anticipate an updated report will appear from the Site Selection Committee. The Board is likely to approve an offer from such a proven site as Uvalde, balanced with the submissions from other sites.. Ask your Regional Director for an update following the meeting.

Having run 18 Regionals in a row, I know what the job looks like. I commend any soaring group that hosts a contest/event.

Best,
Cindy B
