Is there anywhere else you can go to look at the threads on RAS that
is a little faster than waiting for google to update?
Thanks

Brian,
I use the website, www.gliderpilot.net to access R.A.S.
and have found it displays posts much quicker than
Google.

Use a newsreader instead of a browser. Outlook Express has one, as does
Netscape 7 (which I use). Even better newsreaders are available as
stand-alone programs, as they give you many options for displaying the
threads, working online/offline, posting options, etc.

It's amazing that I can post with Google groups, and the post shows up
elsewhere almost instantaneously, yet takes almost a day to show up on
Google groups. This is one area in which Google sucks.

Perhaps I misunderstood what Brian was asking: I thought it was the
display responsiveness while reading the threads, but perhaps he meant
the posting delay Liam mentions.

Eric and Liam got it right. I am actually posting through
gliderport.net right now as I have yet to figure out
what to put in for newsgroup server in netscape. For
some reason it does not like rec.aviation.soaring.

Does your ISP have a news server? If so, configure that in. If not,
I'm sure somebody knows the names of suitable public news servers.
Once that's done, your newsreader should be able to show you the list
of available newsgroups and let you select the ones you want to
subscribe to. My ISP's server carries 37225 newsgroups right now,
ranging from the sensible (comp.os.linux.*) through mild lunacy
(rec.aviation.soaring) to the extreme
(alt.alien.vampire.flonk.flonk.flonk).

Which Netscape? I use 7.1, and can help with those settings. You will
need the name of the news server from your ISP, usually something like
"news.ispname.net".
If your ISP doesn't have a news server, there are free ones, such as
this one from Germany:

I also read RAS on gliderpilot.net. I've found that it updates pretty
fast, so I can see what's been posted in the last few minutes.
However, I've discovered that posts made with gliderpilot.net don't
thread properly unless they are in response to the first message in a
thread. If you reply to a reply, your message gets threaded
incorrectly - it shows up as a reply to the first message in the
thread or something like that. You can see this by later finding your
post using google.com or a newsreader. Consequently, I only post with
gliderpilot.net if I'm either starting a thread or replying to the
first message.
Not that I'm complaining about gliderpilot.net, mind you. I really do
appreciate the service it provides, and respect it within the bounds
of its limitations.
If I'm replying to a reply, what I do is wait until the reply comes up
on google.com, and then use google to post my response. The
intervening few hours will often give me time to write and edit my
post, or perhaps reconsider and decline to post altogether. Many (but
not all) times that waiting period has given me enough time to
self-moderate what might have otherwise been an intemperate post. I
think that that helps make this corner of the world a better place.
Thanks, and best regards to all
Bob K.
