New web layout for OLC, at least on my phone. I liked the old layout, but I balk at change..

There's a radio button at upper right that allows you to revert to the previous layout.

New layout on PC browser too. Yes there is a button to revert to the older layout. But those kind of things eventually disappear. The new layout has more "white space" and less data on a screen. And some data items seem to have vanished from the lists. E.g., the type of glider used in a flight. And, still no way to search by glider type? Also, flights with a "red V" now invisible in lists?

I see glider type, much as before. Search on glider type works for me.

In new layout, "red V" flights visible in by-airport lists, but not in by-club lists.

March 19th 18, 07:18 PM
Flight status (red V vs green V, etc) not visible in lists by club or airfield, but visible in list for specific pilot?

March 19th 18, 07:40 PM
I only see the search option in the "daily score" page, which is not as useful as having it on a season's listing, say. Also, it does not work when I try it (in Firefox) - I entered "ASW-20" (to please Evan) and got the cryptic error message "{"title":"Results:","items": [],"status": ["search string less then 2 combined signs","no item found"]}".

Looking at the flights of one club last year (for example), here:
https://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-3.0/gliding/club.html?cc=1775&st=olcp&rt=olc&c=US&sc=1&sp=2017
the dates are off by one day. E.g., the flights listed on August 25 really happened on August 26, as can be seen by looking at the detail info page for a flight, or by clicking on the OLC 2.0 layout button.

Some of the flight times are wrong in the new layout. It shows one of my 2:15 hour flights as 3:15.

Looks like no more Google Map view. And they are one day behind the rest of the world...

Nope - don't like it. Not one bit.

Not an improvement at all. In 2.0 I can see 19 flights on my screen, in 3.0 I can see 2 flights without scrolling.

Don't like it. Not one bit.

Google still available when logged in under "Advanced". But, it is set up for east-west flights. Map is 4-5 times wider than it is tall.

Dave, I can see more flights than you without scrolling. May be some other setting? Not seeing the value of listing the club below the pilot's name and doubling the vertical space required for each flight entry.

The glider isn't pointing the way the glider is flying. Look at some of the straight out flights Tony did. Closest I can zoom in and see the entire length of the flight, I have both coasts visible in the Advanced Google Map view. (May 4, 2017).

I'm using Firefox when I see 2 or 3 flights on the page. I tried with IE and can see 5 flights, but still no where near what was visible in the 2.0 layout.

Still don't like it - not one bit.

Needs some options to provide one line per flight and then maybe a compact option to show even more per page. Currently, the two lines of text per pilot really take up 3 lines as measured vertically. It's "pretty" and "clean", but I hate that most vendors choose to do this than present more information per page.

It is nice that one can now click on the club from the main page.

Also on the mobile version it only shows points for the flight, I'm more interested in km flown and triangle km. Would be nice to choose what's displayed on the smaller mobile screen.

They do provide an email address for comments and corrections on the new site: smartOLC <at> onlinecontest.org

I hope they read this group too? That would get them multiple feedback items in one place. Would be nice if somebody "there" would say so here.

well the cynic in me would say that this is a US Centric group and the OLC has pretty demonstrably not cared about the US. So I'd be pleasantly surprised if they read RAS or cared about our feedback.

Unfortunately most vendors avoid public forums like fire. They know that once they respond they will get more feedback, questions and complains than they can handle... it is much more effective to email them directly.

I just tried to donate to OLC and along with the regular CC info, they wanted most of my SSN and the card PIN number. Really? You want my SSN and PIN? I’ve never been asked for that to make any purchase before. Pass....

You must deal in mostly cash, perhaps? E.g., SSA membership renewal requests the sec code.

I made my first glider flight since the change over and I immediately
pressed a button for the old format.Â* Now that I'm interested in playing
with the new format, it's not apparent, to me at least, how to switch back.

Dan,
To revert back to the future (newer version) replace the "3" in the URL to "3". Worked for me. Cut and paste:
https://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-3.0/gliding/userlist.html

I've had the opposite experience, in that the "2" does not stick, and even had URLs with an explicit "2" show up in the "3" page format. I've also have mixed success in seeing the map of a specific flight in the 3.0 format in my browser, it shows the rest of the info in the page, but not the map. Clicking the "revert to 2.0" button on the page does go to the old format and the map then shows.

Thanks.Â* So 3.0 in the URL gets you version 2.0.Â* Clever Germans...

If we can get the owners of Glideport.aero to publish points for each flight I think that OLC will become obsolete.
The graphics and utility of Glideport is sooo much better than OLC.

I find the Glideport display rather hard to figure out, and slow on non-fast connections (at least until one takes out the 3D window), but it does have some nice features. OLC-type score calculation seems to be implemented within other software, such as Tophat/XCsoar, thus it could also be embedded within Glideport.

There is growing functional overlap between at least these three services: OLC, glideport.aero, and glidernet.org. I suspect that (1) not all of them will survive more than a few more years, and (2) there will be some wailing and gnashing of teeth in the process. It is also quite possible that the world will go one way, and a certain large country that considers itself exceptional will go another way.

Talking about Glideport and some alternative data communication methods, is it legal in the USA to have a cellphone talk to the cell towers from a flying aircraft?

It's been pointed out to me that there is also crosscountry.aero - so make that four overlapping services at the least.

I’ve been using crosscountry.aero in addition to OLC for years. It’s main advantage is a comprehensive electronic log book which does not exist anywhere else as far as I know. I highly recommend it.

Well, then, take a look at skylines.aero, too.Â* I use it for keeping up
my logs since I have the opportunity to choose the units used. It
appears to use the OLC rules but in a much friendlier package.
