To avoid "yo-yoing" rules 1.4.5.b. and 1.4.3.c. of the Code have the "10 km
apart / only once" restriction. Works fine to avoid that pilots fly back and
forth between two nearby turnpoints e.g. along mountain ridges.
We feel however that it is not reasonable to apply this "anti yo-yo"
restriction to long flights where "yo-yoing" is completely out of the
question. A proposal to amend this restriction to the much more general form
of "no more than three visits to turn points may be claimed" has been
prepared and filed to IGC. When the soaring community accepts the amendment
proposal, "yo-yoing" is still effectively prevented but long sportif flights
are no longer hurt.
