View Full Version : Want to go fly but "on call"
January 21st 19, 03:32 PM
Want to go fly, but on call, any solutions?
Cell phone is obviously out, don't want to talk on the out while flying and they don't work much above pattern altitude anyway.
Willing to land in order to call back, just need a notification.
Old fashioned pager?
Any other means?
Thanks ๐

Get someone to cover you for a couple hours, or carry a pager if you are willing to land.

Both the inReach Mini and the Spot X provide 2 way communication over text or email via a satellite link. They also have the added benefit of being satellite trackers so if you land out or bail out your crew, or EMS, can find you.

Any advice on how one could go about dragging the company and union into the 21st century and allowing modern means of communication?๐ฃ๐ฃ

Text messaging works well in some of the areas I fly, even when phone calls don't.
I've sent text and pictures to my crew from 10,000' while flying near Mt Rainier,
remote places in NV, and over the farm country of Eastern Washington state.

I would have my wife on the radio and my secretary could telephone her and she would relay to me .

Text via satellite is one thing (I have no experience in that), but cell is dependent. That I do have some experience in. Northern NJ, decent coverage (Verizon, a few years ago), maybe 5000AGL, sorta flat ground........hit or miss on sending a text in flight. I had to watch the signal strength start coming up, then hit send.
I figured out part of the issue was a CF cockpit, so holding the cellphone above the cockpit rail helped. This was in cruise flight, thermaling may have helped, may have hurt.....
PS, the only reason I did this was I had radio issues and I "wandered off" and nobody knew where I was. I figured a text back to someone at the field at least gave them a direction and intent (last contact with one of our club pilots was 10 miles north of Middletown, NY/home, I was now SW 20 or so miles out from home and continuing out).

Been in that predictament a lot over the years. Thought about a Sat phone but they are pricey! Curious to know if thereโs a way to automatically forward text messages from my cell to one of the latest trackers.
Solution also depends on if youโre on short or long call out window....and how far you want/can wander from home field. Iโve frequently ended up towing instead. Or resigned to stay low and close to home in the glider in order to still receive on my cell.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone.
Text isn't a viable option, yet, and I hate to ask anyone to watch the phone and radio me.
Have in the past just worked the line.
Maybe it's just time to get checked out to tow.
