Becker Radio battery

Hi Guys,
I seem to remember that there was some discussion here a few years ago
about problems with the internal battery in Becker VHF Transceivers
going flat, and the radio subsequently losing stored frequencies and
other information.
A friend of mine has a Becker radio, which is starting to show signs
of such failure, and I am wondering if the battery is a readily
available type, and can be replaced by someone with some experience
with electronics (35 years working in the game).

The problem with the batteries is that they start to corrode and leak
out damaging the circuit boards. Many times the circuit board needs
replacing in combination with the batteries.

G'Day John,

The battery, a 2.4V "fat button" NiCad, had a tendency to leak and
damage the circuit board in some Becker radios. Replacement batteries
were available at some soaring supply places, but were over-priced.
My favorite battery shop tack-welded two 1.2V button batteries
together with 4 inch leads (cost: $8.00). The new battery was about a
millimeter too tall, so I removed the old battery from my Becker 3201,
cleaned the circuit board, velcro'd the new battery to the back of the
radio, and ran the two wires (+ and -) through a tiny hole drilled in
the rear plate to the proper locations on the board. Works great and
replacing the battery will be easier next time.

A couple of years ago I ordered 4 replacement batteries from Becker's
in Miami (just to make the minimum order requirement), used two and
sold on the other two on this Newsgroup. Quite helpful at Becker IIRC.
