I am working with Jon St. Cloud, the owner of this LXNav group, to help set it as best as possible during it infancy.

A comment and a question;

First, we'd like to try as much as possible to keep SPAM artists out of the group as sometimes unfortunately infest RAS. SPAM is a tricky word - this is about someone messaging totally off topic - this it not about someone messaging LXNav related stuff that you might disagree with. We believe that all new members should be approved right away, but if they truly are SPAMMING the group their membership should be revoked.

Second, should anyone/everyone be able to view the contents of this new group without first becoming a member? Of course, non-members will not be able to post to the group nor see the membership. This everyone-can-view is the default setting for new Google groups and is currently active for this group. I can think of one reason why this should be true - to allow prospective members that might stumble onto the group to get an idea of what the group is talking about.

What say you? Any other new Google Group best practices?

Thanks, John

Hi, I would like to join - what do I have to do?

Allowing others to view posts but not ID’s seems reasonable to me.

Simply go to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/lxnav-user-group and click on the blue "Apply to join group" box near the top of the page. Thanks!

Why use a news group when a forum allows features like being able to attach or embed images, video clips, documents, etc?

Also allowing someone to post as soon as they have registered won't stop spam bots which generate random fake accounts.

I can view all the posts but I don’t get a “join” button on the group?

Same here Rob. I suspect they’ve geo-blocked it for non-US users. I’ve had to use a VPN to be able to post this. A bit of a shame when it’s a global sport and we’re discussing Slovenian products! (LX)

Doh, the reply above was outside the group. The inability to join or reply remains.

A couple of comments;

- You are able to attach documents to messages.
- True that a bot could try to join the group but I mandate that they tell me why they want to join the group which should allow me to not allow bot to join. But if someone/something gets past this step and posts some crud, I can (unlike RAS) retroactively eliminate the post and remove the user account.
- Someone from outside the US should absolutely be allowed to join including the ISS! I will try to determine why this might be and correct it, then report back.

I joined (outside USA) without any problems.

I did quite a bit of research and do not see any way for me to control a Google group to prevent any country from joining. I am wondering if this is some Google policy (or country Internet policy) that is in force which I cannot override. See https://techcrunch.com/2010/04/19/google-censorship/ and https://onimap.citizenlab.org/filtering-pol.html. What doesn't make sense is that you can see the posts, just not join the membership, which is a very odd type of censorship indeed.

Rob, CJ, krasw - So I can investigate further can you please reply privately contact me and let me know where you are located when trying to join? Are you a member of another (US based) Google Group which might offer a clue?

Thanks, John

If you do not see the blue "Apply to join group" button then send me your email address and I will invite you manually. That seems to work.

Are you logged in to google? If you are not, you won't see the Join button as it doesn't know who to join you as. (Just tested this from Australia, so location is not the issue).

That is the thing.
Being logged in to any other group via Google the button is there.

Not quite gents, I’ve been viewing whilst logged in. There’s no problem with RAS (reply arrow is displayed).

It turns out viewing the group from my laptop has fixed the problem, as I’d been using a mobile device previously. Problem solved, though i’ll still forward the screenshots to John for info.

So I passed the approval and am a member, but I seem to get an email every time someone posts. I don't get this on r.a.s Is there a way to turn off these alerts?

Go to My Settings in the Group upper right picture on upper torso and setting icon
Membership and email settings
email delivery preferences (change)

Google groups have user-defined settings. For this go to My settings / Membership and e-mail settings.

Does anyone remember the "good old days" when people could actually read
words and didn't need nondescript pictures on web pages to signify
something so simple as "Preferences"?

I am conflicted on images versus words. My $0.02 on this is that mankind (and politically incorrect "men") are visual beasts thus making it quicker to navigate images rather than reading - not to mention that words clutter up the human/web interface. That being said "people could actually" do their own research to find a solution. A simple Google search of "GOOGLE GROUPS HOW TO LIMIT EMAILS" provides the answer - but you do have to read. ;-) Boy, are we off topic.
