Falke in the wave

[Janos Bauer]

We plan to discover "local" (~70km) wave with a motor falke. There
will be a wave expert (leading the local wave camp) but so far only pure
sailplanes flown there. Is there anything what could cause problem with
this plane? Is it possible to start the engine at low temperature?

I sometimes flew a Dimona motorglider up to 6500m, and I wouldn´t rely on
the engine at all. It always started, but after -30°C air temperature at
altitude the engine doesn´t get warm during descent. It once stopped on the
runway when I had to hold position before taxiing to the Apron.

Hehe :-) This reminds me of my early days... It got me once, when I
had about 20hrs. Went soaring with a Falke in winter, and the engine
wouldn't restart (using the electrical starter) when I got low.
Luckily, this was anticipated and I was over the airfield.

You probably can crank the engine running by pushing to over 150km/h.
This method, including it's altitude loss, should be in the handbook.

Pay attention to low oil temperature and high oil pressure afterwards.
This means that full power may not be available until the engine has
warmed up somewhat.

Thanks Gerhard! It's just a backup option if there is no enough glider
on the airport. We plan to stay 5-8km from the wave camp airport. May be
Saturday will be the DAY;)
