View Full Version : Ventus 3 Performance In Perry SC

I noticed the Ventus 3 took 3 of the top 5 in the 18 meter class.
Looks like to me they have come up with [ again] a very fine ship.
I haven't seen one in person yet, look forward to that day.

It is a very nice ship.
I might note that the pilots were the major reason for the results at Perry.

V3's also took the bottom two spots, or two of the bottom five, considering that the only ones below were withdrawn.

15 and 18m Nationals will be interesting this year now that JS-3s are in the country.

Perry is kind of weird with "FAI" classes but no water ballast.

April 29th 19, 03:37 AM
Tony we were allowed water in FAI combined and handicapped as if dry.

My old ASW27 won in 15m class, but it was the pilot.
Thinking I can't do what Bruce Taylor accomplishes in my 29 either.

Perry is it's own thing. You have pilots that are current, pilots that are contest current and guys that haven't flown in six months. The weather is whatever it is (highly variable, this year four low blue days, medium hard to really hard).

18s and 15s allow water. Water was not an advantage this year. I gridded dry three days, carried water halfway around one day, was glad to be rid of it when I finally dumped it.

Gliders win nothing, especially with speeds in 40s, 50s and low 60s. This year's winners, Dick, Erik, Jason and Chris are a fine bunch of pilots. 15s was a lot of fun. See you guys next year!

Pilots win contests, set records, etc. Not gliders. Of course gliders should be considered also, but so do the instruments, and what not.

Oops my bad. I think I must've read that in one of Leigh's reports, but she was just referring to open class.

And once again the site selection committee put US Nationals at the early part of the season. It is like starting the season with the Super Bowl or World Series.

Let's hope we don't damage as many gliders as they did cars at Daytona because of rusty drivers starting the season. You make my point. Drivers championship is decided at the end of the season.

I am guessing your friend doesn't fly gliders and live in the north where it snows. Early nationals favor pilots from the south and those that are retired and can go to Florida, Texas, Arizona or Southern California in the spring.

I am new to gliders , I live in Florida , is that good? I thought colorado and other places near mountains was "better" .

Yes Evan, your attitude helps explain why the US continues to underperform at international competitions. We continue to do everything possible to hurt ourselves. From rules, site selection, team selection, and team support the SSA actually seams to want to do poorly.

I realize I am hijacking the thread but if you want to always be ready and live in an area where soaring season never ends and you can fly cross country in thermals or wave every month of the year without having to drive more than 3-4 hours then central California (Bay Area) is your place. Just check OLC...

65 gliders, low weak, blue, and sometimes windy, and not a scratch on a glider.

T8 would have won if he did not get the 250 UO (unsafe operation) penalty on Wednesday. OUCH

Yep. I made a mistake / owned it / apologized to the CD even before I knew I'd got the penalty. Crummy pattern for a relight. Didn't scratch anything, but margins were too thin / not up to my usual standard. If that's a national record for a UO penalty, I promise to be humble about it.

(Continuing hijacking the thread)
Many folks move to Reno/Carson area to retire and enjoy fantastic soaring for 4-5 month per year, the rest of the year the glider seats in the trailer (except a small handful of pilots who can fly the Sierra wave in class A).
Living in the Bay Area or Central Valley gives you access to great soaring year around.

Ill plug AZ too we fly most weekends, if we had a fbo and not a club I would post a xc flight at least every other week all winter long at Prescott :)

Haha Ramy - please let us know what the average cost is of a nice 4,000’ home in SF or the Central Valley?

Warm hugs (and let’s fly together again soon),

FWIW comps in our country favour rich pilots too. Come to think of it I can't think of any aspect of gliding which benefits from a shortage of funds.

Cheers Ben

Bruno,

Given the recent price increases I would say that the Central Valley really isn’t much more expensive than the Wasatch Front is these days. But then I live on the eastern side of the Sierra’s so what do I know..

One of our club ordered a V3 in 2017 and his provisional delivery
slot is December 2020.
When I spoke to the agent for the ASG29 last year he offered a
canceled order at 3week but said most were waiting for the new
ASG33.
I think the availability of second use ships and the price is the
best indicator of desirability :
There are no V3 available in Europe .
