L-13 + TE + Audio Vario

I would like our club to install an audio variometer
in our basic trainer, the L-13 Blanik.

Some candidate varios include, the Borgelt B-40, the
Tasman, and the LX-16 (I think). There may be others
too. But I believe these all need TE input.

The Blanik is not plumbed for TE. Has anyone done
it? If so, could you provide me with information?

We installed a TE probe near the rear of the baggage compartment, and it
seemed to do an adequate job. Not the best location, but given the
typical cross-country speed range of the L13, good enough, and it was
easy to mount and get the tubing to it.

Ray, our Blanik has a TE probe mounted to the front bulkhead ahead of the
canopy. It sticks up vertically maybe 6-8 inches through a short slot cut in
the rear of the nose cone. It doubles as the yaw string anchor.

I did the same with mine. It worked out real well. It was also very
easy since it was near the panel. Not a lot of tubing to run. You do
want to get it up a bit so it is not in disturbed air by canopy.

I can recommend the Tasman vario. I looked at the B-40 and decided
that the Tasman (purchased from Paul at Cumulus Soaring) had many more
modern features and was a better deal. It has been great. Also, I have
had limited success with fuselage probes. It is not too hard to mount
a TE probe on the vert fin. On my old HP-18, I glued a hardwood block
the shape of the airfoil into the fin, and then drilled/ glued in the
TE mount. But, sometimes it is a bit of a pain to route the tubing
from the fin to the cockpit. The fuselage probe I had was terrible.
You have to make sure the probe is away from any turbulance or pressure
change induced by the structure..and usually the best place is high on
the vert. fin.
