One here now living in Canada, but when I was in Wellington, it was quite
vibrant with atleast two homebuilders in the same suburb that I lived in.
One was building a Nieuport 12 and the other a Sonex (I think). Lots of
homebuilders around... we started it all remember with Richard Pearse....

Check with the local aeroclub and also check out the Recreational Aircraft
Association of New Zealand (RAANZ) http://www.raanz.org.nz/ They are an
ultralight organization, but there are lots of homebuilders that are
members.

thanks for that, hard to kow where to start.... I'm a real newby, but
looking ahead if I want to buy my own plane, given the choice of a
"new" hombuilt and a 30 yr old cessna 150, I know where I'll be
looking, trouble is I havent been able to find out much info, so
thanks for the tiop0, I will go take a look.

Cheers

Gidday :-)

For a first hit, try SAANZ's web site at http://www.saa.org.nz/ --
they're the main NZ organisation for homebuilders.

There are also many NZ microlighters who do their own construction and
maintenance. Their web site is at http://raanz.org.nz/

If you've got any specific questions, i'm happy to answer them.

Hi Marlbra,

Theres quire a healthy homebuild scene down this way withat least seven
projects that I'm aware of.

Great stuff, thanks for that, Im probalby jumping the gun here a wee
bit, I dont have my PPL yet, although I dont think that is a
prerequesite for flying a homebuilt, maybe I will have a look at the
site you suggested and take it from there, slowly getting airbourne
though, thanks for the site advise, will take a look

Cheers

WOW, so what are you going to be building? and yeah from my quick
research its seems that things seem more lively the further south you
go :-(

Hey again, building a Pegazair 100, http://www.tapanee.com , I've just
received the plans, so hope to get the project underway quite soon. When not
found attempting to build an aircraft, I'm a full time B cat flight
instructor, so if you have any queries about a PPL or the like, drop me a
line.

If you want to build a project under CAR rule part 103, you will get around
having to hold a PPL, but you will need to join a microlight organisation
and undertake training to qualify for a microlight pilots certificate.

Regards

Mike

Does it seem strange that New Zealand put the flightless bird, the Kiwi on
their email stamp!

Do you know that the Kiwi lays the biggest egg in relation to its body
weight of any other bird in the world?

Ian

Just had a look, awesome looking ariplane, some of the homebuilts
look..... how to put this delicatlely.... a little "TOO" homebuilt,
but that looks like a beauty!

I am not really at the stage of building my own just yet, more looking
at
- Getting PPL
- Getting some "real" airtime
- Buying my own maybe, as finances allow, I was thinking that a
"newish" homebuilt would be a better bet for the money than a 30 yr
old Cesna or the like.

How else are they going to know who's turn it is to use the computer?

And a kiwi is biological proof that the early english settlers did strange
things with sheep!

That is just the opposite of what you find at OSH. The ones that show up
there, usually put the spam cans to shame.

Yes. If you love airplanes, you owe it to yourself, to save up and get
there, at least once.

A few years ago (don't recall the year) a group of Australians chartered a
Qantas 747 and LANDED at OSH. I seem to recall hearing that some Kiwis were
also on the plane. I wasn't there - I think they landed at OSH???

Did they fly direct? Customs? Anyone know the details?

This guy flew his Stock RV-4 Vans homebuilt to Oshkosh ...from Australia.

When I stayed in the dorms, in 2003, my floor was "Down Under Central."
Kiwis and Aussies were everywhere. It seemed like I kept bumping into
Aussies and Kiwis throughout the week.

If I was on the FREE tram there were Aussies or Kiwis sitting next to me.
Seaplane Base - Kiwis
Warbirds - Aussies
In line for grub - Kiwis
Air shows - Aussies and Kiwis all over the place

You couldn't turn around in 2003 without tripping over a Kiwi or an Aussie
<g>.

We landed on 27 as the Aussies landed on 36. It was the all orange 747
with aboriganie designs al over it. Impressive!

Don't know.

I have attended his presentation when he was in the SF Bay area.

I wonder if there's particular relevance to the capitals here and the
presence of Antipodeans? :-)

No... that'll be the Aussies... never could handle their beer. :-)

Aussie Jon Johanson did indeed build an RV-4 and fly it to Oshkosh.
Actually he flew it all around the world - three times (west to east,
east-to-west, then over the North Pole. However, his RV-4 is far from
stock - it's extensively modified for ultra-long-range. Jon gave a talk
at Oshkosh last year and shared some of the details. If you get a chance
to hear him don't miss it.

I first met Jon at Oshkosh in 2000 - he was in the midst of his third
round the world flight then. I invited him to visit the Noon Patrol
Nieuport builders in Independence Oregon. It wasn't much out of his way
since Independence is only 30 miles from Vans Aircraft. I've had the
opportunity to meet Jon a few more times and he's no stereotypical wild
Aussie, he's a very professional and extremely well-prepared pilot.

Here's Jon's plane:

An enormous fuel tank fills the back set area:

His canopy cracked in the arctic cold as he flew over the North Pole.
