Hotels? The good ones (i.e. nearby and inexpensive) are probably pretty
full. Openings will come up as the date approaches, but you'll need to keep
an eye out to find one. Also, consider the dorms at the local college.
Personally, I like to camp, but I'm a masochist.

You can't get reservations. I don't think they have filled up the field in
the last several years. A good strategy is to time your arrival for mid
morning one day towards the middle or end of the show. Lots of people are
headed home by then, so you can get a good parking place. Of course, there
is more to see at the beginning of the event. Some folks can't take a whole
week to display their whizbang 500...

If you want to see the ultralights, the EAA Museum, a couple of airshows,
all the flightlines from homebuilt, to helicopter, to antique, to warbird,
to ultralight, you'll need 3 days, and you'll be walking yourself to death.
If you want to attend any seminars or take a serious look inside the display
buildings, add more time. That said, I like to plan 5 day trips to Osh.
One day to get there (before noon), one to get home, and 3 on the field. I
get overwhelmed with more than 3 days.

Most of the info you're looking for is here.
http://www.airventure.org/2005/planning/where_to_stay.html

Dorms in town fill up early - free bus takes you the few miles over to the
airport. Last year about 800 of the 2,200 UW-OSH dorms were under
renovation. $44 per night gives you 2 beds. Bring a $15 pedestal fan!!

4 days is fine. Then 4 days the next year and 4 days the next year ...this
will be my 3rd year.
(I have yet to see the Museum, the old airfield, or spend enough time at the
Ultralight pasture.

Oshkosh will pop up here a couple of more times between now and July <g>.
Keep posting and asking.

Most times I've flown in to OSH in old 15-Lima, and nothing beats
that. But driving there, you'll find that motel reservations (and
price) are no biggie, even on an ad hoc decision to motor there if you
stay far enough out. I've thus stayed at motels near Madison or
Milwaukee, and the commute is fairly easy. Last automobile trip I
stayed in Sheboygan, at a brand new motel of moderate price. It's
also a pretty, eclectic little town with some nice restaurants.
Important is arguably staying overnight someplace that's well remote
of what's happening at OSH. Attitude adjustment in an odd way, pure
relaxation if you will, til' the next morning's commute to OSH to
repeat the cycle of what you experience at Airventure.

Hotels in Oshkosh, Appleton and Fond du Loc are booked now. You will need
to go quite a ways further out to get something. There are last minute
cancellations and a place on the grounds that will find you a place to stay
during OSH although you might have to move every night.

The dorm was not a bad option IMHO. Mine had a microwave and a fridge.

You do have to prop the door open a wee bit at night for some circulation,
even with the fan running - helps get the room cooled down quicker.

Jack, you are coming from Sacramento, aren't you? Wanna convoy this year?
The blueonblue182 is leaving on Saturday to hit Jay's pool party in Iowa
City on Sunday into Oshkosh on Monday.

Leaving Saturday after the EAA meeting and election for a straight flight
home -- usually East Undershirt Nebraska the first day and home on Sunday.

I go for 6 days, and have always gone away wishing I had 3 or 4 more days.
Yes, you get tired, but it is a "good" tired! <g>

For my money, you can't beat camping on the field. Showers suck, but if you
bring enough food and a way to keep stuff cold, you can't beat getting up
and being there, and the ability to go to camp to eat and rest, and party,
if you want.

Our fly-in pool party will be on Saturday (rather than Sunday) this year, to
allow everyone to arrive in OSH one day early, as prescribed by both
tradition and common sense.

The rec.aviation party at our campsite will still be on Wednesday though,
methinks. Or does that interfere with your other parties, Jim? Montblack?

Jim, are you bringing the monster grill again? Like to see that puppy fired
up this year!! Depending what The Group wants - we'll keep some things the
same and change other things.

Pre-cooked brats is one addition.
Watermelon: Too much darn work, not enough interest. Plus they weren't very
good last year.

No big pickle jar!
Cheese didn't go over very well (sorry Wisconsin)
Maybe some small steaks this year. What the Heck, it's vacation.

July is just around the corner. Who am I kidding, we're going to get 5-7
inches of snow tonight!!

Man, I'd like to see that danged thing in action, too. All I caught was a
glimpse of it last year, as Jim pulled away with that Volkswagen-sized
trailer/grill in tow... (Not that we had a shortage of grills, mind you...)

Ya, hey, one time dere. Brats+Wisconsin=Good eatin'...

Agreed. Anything that can even remotely be construed as "healthy" probably
has no place at OSH, anyway...

What? Says who? I really liked the cheese, but there was so danged much
food (thanks to the feast you brought) who could eat cheese, too? :-)

Steaks? Did someone say "steaks"? I'm always up for steaks, although
getting them cooked to everyone's liking is always a challenge. Jim, does
that monster grill have a "steak setting"??

Whew! We are luckily (supposedly -- the night is still young) on the "rain"
side of this storm. We'll see...

Planning on bringing the MOAG! (mother of all grills) I'll make *Darn Sure*
there is no confusion this year.

Might I make a suggestion of cooking a chunk of pig? Real life NC pig
pickin' that we are famous for! Either picked, or shredded, by electric
shredder. With vinegar (Eastern NC) or barbeque (Western NC), or even just
plain, picked off, falling off the bone! Mmmmm, gooo-ooood!

What say ye all? ;-)

If not that, it cooks anything well, and room for lots of it. (Around 18
square feet)

Oh, man, Jim -- now you're TALKING!

However, I can see some problems. Cooking a pig, delectable though it may
be, takes many hours. Trucking big grills into the North 40 is already a
marginally "legal" thing to do at OSH -- do you really think we can leave
that big ol' thing running all day, unattended, in the middle of 12,000
parked airplanes?

And, assuming not, who is going to volunteer to travel all the way to OSH,
only to spend a day baby-sitting a pig on a spit?

Perhaps brats and steaks -- although clearly inferior -- is the better way
to go? Or is there a quicker way to grill a pig?

Nope, no way to rush a pig!. As far as the babysitting the cooking goes, I
have a plan.

Our Aviation Explorer posts all take a day doing KP, which is cooking and
cleaning up for all of the camp, which is around 100 plus. We have talked
about doing pig for the whole base. All we have to do is take Wednesday for
our cooking day. I only have to be around for one meal; (by splitting up
the meals among our members) the others can help do the all day cooking,
sitting legally inside the Explorer compound.

We would also have an out for bringing the grill in, so if it can't come in,
we can just carry the hog in via van, and eat it out of the pan, instead of
out of the pan on the grill.

It is pretty easy to cook, anyway, and once the temperature stabilizes, you
just let it do it's thing!

No, Gail and I can't spend ten days away from the business, and I have this

We aren't getting to the gig until Wednesday, and aren't planning on a dorm

The other option is to find a BBQ company in the area and order
the pig. They'll deliver it (with all the fixins) at the time
and location you request. No one needs to babysit. No one needs
to cook.

The only requirements are:
1) someone to act as coordinator for dinner reservations and take the money
IN ADVANCE so no one gets stuck for the bill
2) someone to take care of the logistics of finding the BBQ company,
making the order
3) someone to either go fetch to goodies or be someplace where the
company can deliver

It's not difficult. Check out the Bo group last year at

Now Blanche, you're messing with the male instinct to kill and cook

Agreed. After walking all day in the (fill in the blank):

(a) Blazing sun
(b) Pouring rain
(c) Cold wind
(d) All of the above (often within a few hours)

All I want is:

(a) Cold beer
(b) Good food
(c) A great bunch of people

Luckily, OSH provides all three in abundance!

Hey Jim...Yep, I'd be coming from Sacramento. The big issue for me is
buying a plane this year. I know, not an acceptable excuse since we are
talking about Oshkosh...but...splitting the rental bill two or three
ways does add up. Still got a couple more months to score a plane
though. Have the partners, have the cash, know what we want...now, we
just need to find that the Arrow with our name on it.

If I do manage to be an Arrow co-owner before Oshkosh and the dates work
out, a little convoy would be fun. I'd love to make it to Jay and
Mary's pool party. I'd probably stay for the entire week.

Hey, you might be able to help me out on the airplane front. In your
travels, if you see any Arrows for sale, drop me an e-mail. We'd love
to find one locally rather than go out of state. Looked at a real nice
one in Auburn, even made an offer but the owner doesn't want to deal so
we're still looking.

The only problem is that our trip seems to be a moving target. First we
were going to get there on Monday after Jay's party on Sunday, but Jay moved
it back to Saturday and that made it just one day over our absolute limit.

Right now the plan is to depart NoCal early Monday and hope to arrive
Oshkosh early Wednesday. Forums Thursday and Friday, EAA Annual Meeting on
Saturday, and depart noonish Saturday, home on Monday.

Steaks will be those single serving (individually packed/wrapped) Schwan's
kind. Rare, medium, burnt to a crisp, your choice. Let Joey (the grill
master) know how you want it - hope Joey volunteers(?) again this year <evil
grin>. Ron also did a great job of burger flip'n last year.

Steaks - in single serving portions, (BS) chicken breasts, pre-cooked brats.
No burgers this year. I will bring some pre-cooked sloppy joes to be heated
for the round bun crowd.

Pig? I'm open. Whatever the consensus of the group turns out to be.

Monster grill - you bet.

I've done each of the above options one year or another. My preference is
camping on the field. If I stay off-field, it seems to take forever to get there
in the morning, free bus service or not.

If you're concerned about getting a camping/parking spot, plan to arrive right
after the airshow ends. The field is closed for the airshow, then they open it
up for departures, then arrivals. The departures, of course, leave empty parking
and camping spots. Read the NOTAM for timing information (and then re-read it,
and re-read it ...).

If you're coming from far away and can't plan your arrival time that accurately,
plan to arrive a little early and hang out at Dodge Co. Airport until the right
time. There's always an interesting collection of aircraft there doing the same
thing. Their fuel is reasonable, and they always have a buffet.

Lets just remember the corkscrew this time. Those tie down screws

One of the beauties of the MOAG, is that it has two separate sides. Pig on
one, steaks and brats and chicken on the other side.

Shoot, I didn't know you had a problem involving the need for a type of
tool. I had enough tools (lacking one) to change a transmission in the
middle of a field, just a couple hundred yards away. I'm sure I could have
managed to get a cork out of a bottle! <VBG>

P.S. I could have done it without the other too, but I'll not talk about
the time differential! ;-)

Nope, EAA is the culprit. By moving the whole danged show schedule up, we
had to move the party up a day -- and *poof* -- there went Jim's entire
week!

Once Jim is elected Grand Poobah of the EAA, I trust he will immediately
rectify this problem.

Wow. This just gets better and better!

Now if only we can figure a way to get it parked at our campsite (so that
we're not running two miles back and forth to the Explorer Scouts
campground, depending on where we get parked) for Wednesday, I think we've
got this party in the bag!

This is excellent information, but beware: Right after the airshow is often
peak arrival time. You may be cheek-by-jowl with more airplanes than you've
ever seen, so practice your slow flight and spot landings.

Personally, I try to arrive mid-morning. This time seems to be something of
a lull, although it's STILL landing with more planes than I see anywhere
else.

One way or the other, we *will* eat good. It'll all work out. Every -pig-

Margy didn't have to ask too many campers before she found someone with
a corkscrew to join the party.

Can someone list the series of Oshkosh start day changes over the last 10
years?

I've lost track.

Have we arrived back where we started?

Yes, OSH now ends before it starts.

My first Oshkosh was 12 or 13 years ago and it started on Friday.

You've got that right, especially when it is only an hours flight away.

In 1973, it started on a Wednesday and finished the following Tuesday (in my
admittedly senior brain's recollection).

I started attending in 1982, but I never stayed the full length of the show,
so that memory is pretty fuzzy for me, too. Didn't the convention used to
be eight days long?

And we could still arrive after dark!
It was fun watching the string of landing lights 20-30 deep inbound.

Approximately 10 minutes per 1/4-inch thickness at 425F.
Works for steaks, fish, chicken and pork.
Depending on just how hot the grill is, the time can be adjusted 1 or 2
minutes either way.

But it was not fun (or safe) trying to park those airplanes after
dark...
The sunset "dead prop" rule is in effect for good reason! (although I
hear people sneaking in or out on occasion).

I've seen, no, heard people blasting out early, but never in. When was the
last time you heard of someone sneaking in?

Me, neither.

We watched some poor guy get turned away entering DOWNWIND for Rwy 27, when
the clock ticked over to 8 PM. The guy was practically *begging* to be
allowed to land, but no dice. (I personally thought this was a ridiculous
abuse of power, and would have had some pretty severe words with the control
tower supervisor, had it been me.)

We were all rooting for him to declare "bingo fuel"...
