SMALL AIRCRAFT CRASHES

Pilot killed as homebuilt plane goes down in field.

One man was killed Wednesday after his homebuilt aircraft crashed in a
Brazoria county hayfield.

The one-man private airplane crashed about 7 pm, nearly one mile south
of Clover Field airport in Pearland. Officials had not released the
man's identity at press time.

Brady Mora was working in his business when he heard a muffled
explosion coming from outside.

I turned around and looked behind me. That's when we saw the aircraft
sitting out in the middle of the field, said Mora, owner of
Friendswood Firewood Company.

Mora said people who identified themselves as family members of teh
dead pilot were at te4h scene. Department of Public Safety troopers
and local law enforcement cordoned off teh crash site.

His brother said he was quiet and an intellectual, Mora said.

Officials did not know if the plane crashed during take-off or landing
at the field.

Mu condolences to the family.

The Chronicle has updated info now..

I did not know him personally, and I'm not even sure I've met him even
though I have been based out of Clover/Pearland for over 2 years (I
havent been on the field much in the past year or so)..

I have been to a few EAA Chapter 12 meetings before, Mike was a Past
President. The chapter has recently relocated to EFD(Ellington)from AXH
(Houston SW).

My heart goes out to his family and his friends.

An aircraft mechanic was killed when his single-seat homebuilt airplane
crashed into a hay field less than a mile from Pearland Regional Airport
Wednesday.

Michael Gerald Bernard, 46, was practicing touch-and-go takeoffs and
landings around 7 p.m. when he radioed that he was having trouble with
his Cassutt airplane, the Department of Public Safety reported. The
small white airplane crashed nose first into a field about a quarter
mile south of County Road 129.

Bernard was killed on impact, DPS investigators said.

Investigators are searching for the cause of the crash.

Bernard maintained a hangar at the field and had two other airplanes,
said Wayne Messinger, airport operations manager. He was licensed to
work on both airplane engines and airframes.

"We have a lot of great guys among our pilots, and he was one of the
best," Messinger said. "He was just stellar."

Oh.... Crap....

The "continental mechanic" bit gave it away...

I know exactly who he is... never knew his name.... and saw him a few
hours before the accident, when he came in to shoot the breeze with
wayne and some others when I was out there Wednesday afternoon.
