Can anyone offer specific info as to the frequencies most commonly used
for a/c searches (non cooperative aircraft, ie xponder off)?

I can see no good reason to answer this question.

Not sure of the exact freqs, but I can pick them up on the filling in my
back molar pretty well. I do find that a few layers of tinfoil wrapped
around my head aids in the reception.

Somehow, Colin, I don't think your suggestion is going to play well in
the book I'm writing. At least not in that chapter, but I'll keep it in
mind. Uh, does your watch light up like my transponder does when it's
swept?

Is it science fiction? I think it would work beautifully.

Nah, I never liked those radium dials.

Any radar designed for this can track an airplane with or without the
transponder. It has nothing to do with the frequency.
The various stealth aircraft are even vulnerable to certain radar
frequencies. This type of radar is not very common though.
So even an airplane designed to be invisible to radar can be
tracked with the proper equipment.

Shoulda thought of that myself -- I've gotten Google-lazy. Good lead,
thanks.
