View Full Version : PU Paint + Electric motor

Hi everyone.
I was thinking ways to make my business model work and make it more appealing for customers. Travelling to the US to make each modification may not be much cost effective. Reading a lot of post about how expensive is the paint refinish and restoration in your country, and some comments of potential clients saying that may be not worth to add an electric motor on a glider with a poor surface condition. I came up with this proposal:
As the tittle says, i am sounding the acceptance of the idea to offer a combo of the Electric self launching system + PU paint refinish (including cockpits interior, maylars, seals, etc). The price reference for a 15M ship is USD30.000 and for an 18M USD33.000. That does not includes the logistics to Argentina. With more gliders packed in the same container, the total price will drop significantly.
The paint job will be made by "ALAS BLANCAS", the best place to restore a glider in Argentina. The owners are nationals champions, they go to the worlds championships too and are well known in the sports.
Of course we will accept gliders that only wants Paint or Motor.
So, i am waiting for your comments to see how can we improve this proposal.
Kindest Regards
Emir

Emir,
I think you would have a very good business opportunity. If you could do ASW27, ASG29, and Venti you would have a great amount of interest. I think critical to the business plan would be ensuring a reasonable cost on the shipping and logistics (all fees for import/export). Dealing with customs and unexpected fees to unload and load gliders has been a major issue for transporting gliders to Argentina. A plus would be if you could arrange to allow owners to fly the glider after the work is done, before it is shipped back.

Isn't logistics to Argentina hellishly complex? I heard horror stories about the WGC in Argentina with customs and tax, and I see Klaus Ohlmann & company all chose to ship their gliders to Chile this year then fly in...

The Perlan team ships the Perlan 2 to Argentina every year; the Egret is flown in.
Perhaps Jim or Jackie Payne could tell you their secrets to get the Perlan 2 in
and out, or ask Ed Warnock.

Thank you very much for your review and comments.
Customs in Argentina are better than before, that's for sure. Now there are more clear rules about temporary importation to add value to a product or process. Taxes and fees for the temporary import are tending to zero, where the costs are the caution insurance(in case that the gliders don't return to US) and logistics.
The company that i've used to import the pegasus from UK was very clear with everything, the final cost did not change more than 5% from the initial budget. There where other formal issues because it was not temporary.
In the case of Klauss, i'm sure that importing to Chile right at the side of Andes is cheaper and easier than to an Argentinian port and then drive 1000km.
Test the glider before shipping back is doable. That is a good point.

It would be great if Emir could make this work.
Three years ago, after a miserable cold rainy day at the Greytown Soaring Center in New Zealand, I was drinking with a friend/engineer/glider_pilot from Slovenia, and others. We got excited about starting a business shipping gliders from the USA to Slovenia for PU paint and FES installation. We kept drinking. In the morning, it was still raining, and some of us were hung over.
Like Argentina, labor rates in Slovenia for refinishing are lower than in the United States. The difference is that Emir does not have to worry about undercutting demand and price for the shiny brand new FES equipped gliders that are being manufactured in Europe. Emir has everything to gain and nothing to lose by making this work.

That looks similar to the GP15 Jeta. Is that what it is based on?

Fast extract and retract times.
How many Watts are you pulling at full power?
Current draw / battery voltage?

Is the same propeller, i bought it from them.
It wouldn't worked without that folding propeller.
The pylon is different because the mechanism is a scissor and not an actuated column.

This is a small motor only for testing purposes.
The final version is a 25/30 kW motor
The battery pack can draw 500A maximum continuous at 120V.
For safety and cycle life it will be limited to 300A, that is more than enough for most of applications.
