Currently waiting on special issuance and when that expires will probably go
sport pilot because of the "Red Tape" of the PPL. I just want to fly!

How many non flying pilots interested in Sport Pilot?
Has anyone taken a poll and gathered numbers on people interested in Sport
Pilot now that it is official?
Have a good day and stay out of the trees!

Gilan,
I start my sport pilot training this weekend. I can't wait! It's tough to
find instructors right now, most are very confused as to the new rule. But
one in this area has taken the time to actually clear it up with the FAA and
is offering the initial training. The written test is not done yet but is
expected by November. But hey get those flight hours in if you want too!

My wife is eight hours into her PPL training. Is "sport pilot" a good
interim target?

Personally I think so, with 15 hours of flight instructor flying and then 5
hours of solo time you can get the sport license. Then you just need to add
time with an instructor to get the PPL. You can train in the same planes
that you will get your PPL in (single engine), but to do your sign off
flight and solos it has to be in a sport class plane. So to me it is a good
way to be able to fly the sport planes while you continue to work on the
PPL. So not only are you getting to have fun flying earlier but you also are
getting alot more flying time in as experience, and I have no doubt this
will make anyone a better PPL when they do finish up with that.

PPL since '82. Didn't want to jump through the hoops for special
issuance. So SP suits me fine. I will probably go fat UL as
Experimental.

Would she have a qualifying Sport Aircraft available to fly? Today, there
are not many of these planes on rental lines. Remember, the "Cezzna" 152 is too
heavy. If you don't have anything qualifying for her to fly, what good would
the license be?

That's a good point, as I think that the answer (at least today) would be
"no".

Well I beg to differ, since alot of trained pilots are no longer eligible to
fly per the FAA due to medical reasons...I hope the SP rule will end up
helping them as well should they chose to fly again.
No I may not be a pilot but I bet you I have made as many planes able to
fly as you have flown in the last 25 years. It's time all of aviation stands
together for the good of aviation and stop the "country club " attitude
towards flying. Remember there are alot of pilots that are not even born
yet...it takes more than official training , it takes the heart and the
freedom of spirit to fly.
Not even to mention I know alot of pilots of the Navy and Marine Corps
that would tell you, you are not a pilot unless you can land on a carrier
with no moon at night 600 miles out at sea in a storm......I am sure the Air
Force has "what" they would call a pilot as well.
Myself I am just happier than a bug in a rug that this new rule will
give someone like me that can not get a medical the chance to finally fly my
own plane. After 25 years building other peoples and fixing others I think I
am due ! :)

WP, be careful how you "read the regs"... if you were "denied" an FAA
Medical, you do not automatically qualify for Sport Pilot... i.e, you
applied for a 1st, 2nd or 3rd class medical and was denied by FAAOKC or any
designated Aviation Medical Examiner who sent the paper work to OKC.
If you allowed a medical to expire, and did not apply for renewal, because
you knew you could not pass a medical, then you may be entitled to exercise
the sport pilot option with a "light sport aircraft".
There is a paragraph in the Sport Pilot regulations that states that those
that have been denied a medical do not qualify. The "key" is, "does the FAA
have a denied medical application on file".
Hope it all works out so you can fly..

Another question, how many qualified sport pilot planes are tricycle gear? Looks like many are tail draggers. Will sport
pilots be better at landing?

I have never been turned down, did not try it because I knew I would be. But
my condition has no effect in the low altitudes and short durations of the
sport class..so I am good to go! hee hee

Now that is a great question and one that can be summed up in a few ways,
there are a few trike geared light sporters but most are in deed
taildraggers. I will also take a taildragger course. As far as finding
planes to qualify in , join the EAA and ask around...you never know when
someone will let you rent their plane. Most of the members around me have
quite a few sport category planes from Ercoupes and Aeronca's to two seat
ultralight types. but as for your question I would say that the experience
of taildraggers will make for better landings and even better pilots. I
doubt if I will beat Ryan in his quest for building the Ultra Cruiser Plus
which is what I will build. Maybe even the mini-coupe as an added bonus if I
can find out more about them.

good deal WP... just kindly ask your non-FAA ME what he thinks..
I take it that you mentioned "altitude" it is a breathing problem..

many currently built aircraft that fall into the "sport aircraft" category
are tailwheel..
depends on what "new" sport aircraft get built as to how they have nose or
tail wheels..
nose wheel assemblies add weight... weight is a "no no" for Light Sport
Aircraft..
does not mean their landings will be any better than a nose dragging pilot..
BT (<~~~ able to do both plus land on one wheel and fly without mechanical
power)

Well,
Yes I did speak to an FAA ME, several FAA "inspectors" and there is no
problem with me a the sport license....commercial flying at 35,000 for 5
hours at a time are out of the question! HAHA Hey I am impressed with one
wheeled landings under no power..ya only get one shot at those!!!!hee hee
Alot of the sport category planes have trike gear, just seems most of the
older types are taildraggers. Find an old Ercoupe, they are easy to fly and
have trike gear and you can find them for sale for about 12,000 ..some
alittle more of course. I think the best thing is the opportunity that this
new class will offer to people. If the CFI's and all grasp it and airports
treat it well they could all see a increase in biz and an interest in some
old planes that not alot of people want anymore. As they say"The sky is the
limit!"

I didn't say anything about anyone that "hasn't gone thru the rigors of
pilot training"
Lots of pilots out there without current medicals and I would call them non
flying pilots.
