Hi,

Any (good) books on Citation I/II systems and/or how to fly it? Anyone
selling the 'manual'? Any other recommendations appreciated.

I'm *thinking* about doing a type-rating sometime during the next 12-18
months, and figured I could start looking at the plane now. BTW: I have the
King's and Sporty's Citation DVD.

Thanks,

Hilton

Lots of C I/II pilots at http://www.ilsapproach.com/forum/index.cgi?index

They probably have a few hints/tips/ideas/recommendations about places to
get or not to get the TR.

Why do you think asking a noncontroversial question about a
type rating is trolling?

Because Steve can't have one or get rated on one?

Um... How about

"I want to learn to fly a jet, but I can't take flight instruction so I want
to find a book about it. - PS I don't need landing instruction - only
takeoff and cruise"

Hilton isn't a troll... just hasn't been around lately, a quick google
search shows he's got over 2300 posts to the rec.aviation groups.

Hilton, why don't you fill us in on what's got you thinking about a
Citation TR?

Idiot.... Hilton has been around [this newsgroup] for a long time. Nothing
in his post related to the idiotic crap you wrote.

He said he wanted to get the type rating in the next few months. I
didn't read anything about only takeoff and cruise. Imagination
running wild? or are you off your meds?

How about you read the post and realize (he was fairly clear on this
point)he was going for a rating and wanted some prep work.

What an idiot!! I think the envy factor shoved itself up your ass.

Jim,

Well, cutting a long story short, I'm been *busy* the last few months. In
May, that little device that usually shows a faint blue line instead
digitally flashed "PREGNANT", so I gave it to my wife to try (just kidding).
Instead of "PREGNANT", it should have said "NEW HOUSE" since we were about
to run out of rooms. So, the house hunting started every (potentially
flying) weekend, finally found one in November, we closed on Decmber 9,
Ashley arrived December 16. All this and working really hard on WingX for
the Pocket PC (http://www.hiltonsoftware.com). I would like to mention
WingX more in the NGs, but then I'd be accused of being a spamming troll!
;) We now have a partnership with King Schools (fantastic group of people,
great company!). We've just added A/FD information for all airports,
navaids etc, Dynamic Flight Navigator, and lots of other cool stuff. OK, so
that's where my time has been going: house, girls, and WingX.

So, I've been busy, I still want to fly, but I'm (delibrately) time-limited
since I absolutely enjoy every minute with my 'girls'. I seriously
considered (and still am considering) my Comm-Glider and perhaps CFI-G. I
had planned to get 1500 hours and the get my 737 type rating (and ATP), but
1500 isn't going to come anytime soon with my (new) responsibilities, and
the 737 type rating is only simulator time. Also, jumping from 172, Archer,
Duchess type of flying to a 737, seems a tad ambitious. For the same price,
the Citation rating would give me jet time, a type-rating, a challenge, and
all in a few intense days. Since most of the work seems to be homework
before the training, the course seems to fit my requirements, and I'll by
flying a jet! :)

Anyway, I'd like to know what your thoughts are - whether you think it's a
great idea or if you think I've been smoking something.

BTW: The King DVD shows a preflight and a flight (John and Martha), I like
it and it is a great example of how much faster things happen. The Sportys
DVD (I've only watched a portion of it) shows the systems in more detail -
not sure what is on the rest of the DVD.

Hi,

I forgot to mention that I initially got the whole 737 idea from Wayne's
ATOP course (http://www.b737.com). Highly recommended - he's a great
teacher - sign up now! A friend and I did it while it was still in Denver
at United. The course recently moved to Continental in Houston. If you
look very careful at Wayne's ATOP site, you will see me shaking Tim M's
hand - Tim and I met on these NGs and then bumped into each other at United
(in fact, he recognized me first) and we became Captain/FO buddies.

Cheers,

I would think it is safe to say that I would occasionally be a good
candidate for a sleep deprivation study. :).

I can absolutely understand why. I hadn't gone on an XC for a while, but a
few weeks I managed to go from HWO (Fort Lauderdale area) down the keys,
landed at Key West, and headed back - amazing views, literally a dream come
true, so that made up for my recent lack of flying.

No. A friend of mine (Captain for SkyWest) tries to convince me to move in
that direction, but it's not going to happen anytime soon. For me, any jet
type ratings would just be 'the next challenge', I love learning about
flying and improving my flying skills, so it just seems like a great
'experience' even though in reality, I'll never use the type rating other
than to impress my wife. :)

You were/are of tremendous help - I've already got some excellent
suggestions. Thanks!

It's been great. It all started because I couldn't find a decent Palm or
Pocket PC application that did what I thought was valuable - so I wrote
WingX. If you'd like a copy, please email
and I'll organize it.

Thanks again Jim!

Sheesh! And I thought I was busy!!

Congrats on the new addition!! and the new house! Remind me to buy some
stock in who ever makes Ambien cause I get the idea that you are doing

As far as advice on which way to go... I'm the wrong guy to ask... when my
wife and I started our family and built our house, it took me 9 years to
start flying again!

I guess I'd try to figure out what my end goal was and then do what looked
best. Are you looking towards the airlines? fractionals? private sector?
Then you need the most time in the planes they use.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, you'll get an idea what is happening in the
industry from http://www.ilsapproach.com. Lots of CFIs there trying to
climb the ladder and plenty of others telling them their nuts :)

Glad to see the software thing is working out for you... congrats on that

Since (at least I learned) a lot of the TR is about the FMS, may be you
benefit from downloading a simulator for the Honeywell GNS-XLS from
http://www.bendixking.com/static/simulators/ (including workbook and
manual).

This box ist installed in a lot of (older ;-) Citations

Have Fun

I see a just for fun type rating... I don't know if it would interest you,
but one thing I've looked into a couple times is a DC3 type rating. There
are several outfits around the country including one "club", I think it's in
CA, where you become a member, get your type rating and then are "approved"
to put your name on their list of pilots to move the airplane around the
country for training and for airshow appearances. Plus it seems like
everybody knows a "local" DC3 which may give you the opportunity to use the
rating.

Another fun rating that you might be interested in, and a lot cheaper, would
be a multi-engine sea rating. There are a couple places in FL that do them,
usually in a Twin SeaBee, or you may be able to find a Twin Otter. Me, I
can't even swim, so it doesn't really appeal to me, but those who I know
have done it have had a blast.

Let me know if you find something... I may just have to start a new
adventure myself.

I'd love a DC-3 type rating. And the cool thing is, is that I can't use the
excuse for not doing it as "I'll never use it" because the same goes for the
Citation or 737 type ratings as well as the seaplane rating -
http://www.norcalaviation.com - the most fun I've legally had in a plane!!!
;)

I'm very tempted. I have family over in FL (see post about Key West
flight), so hopefully I get around to doing that someday. Last time I
checked, the owner of the twin that Norcal Aviation has/had wouldn't put
money into required engine maintenance, so they didn't have a CMES.

Update: I bought the Sportys Citation DVD a couple of months ago, also
bought their glider DVD, and yesterday my Nolly Citation DVD arrived in the
mail. Oh, I also bought a Citation manual on eBay.

Off topic: Speaking of gliders, a friend recently got his Private (Glider)
add-on and was up in Minden today and he said he got to 17,999 and 11.9" and
really had to push the nose down - 3.5 hours on a $35 tow - and he called me
at work to tell me. Nice guy! :|
