These two are easy, and I've only flown at one of them (the one that's
always opened)!

Here's where I took my first glider ride (in '78). Sure has changed
since then:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=denver,co&ll=38.972701,-104.686135&spn=0.005912,0.007596&t=k&hl=en

It looks more like this now:

Which is where I did my check ride, almost 16 years later.

Last year, more OLC kilometers were flown by the club at this site than any
other in the world.

I have added links to the Google satellite maps in the 'Worldwide Soaring
Turnpoint Exchange" [ http://soaring.aerobatics.ws ], as well as Google's
road maps, Rand McNally's road maps and - most useful of all for the
landoutacholics - driving instructions from the home 'drom to the turnpoints
and other waypoints for all of the US sites [I'll install a little form for
your crew to enter your lat/lon if you don't make it to an airport,
"shortly"]. The links are G and g for the Google maps and satellite images,
R and r for the Rand McNally maps and driving.

While the Google pics can be very nice, they are a bit spotty and for
example TSA is not very good at all, while just a couple of miles north the
resolution improves substantially. The Terraserver maps, which have been
linked to for years, show a glider on the runway at TSA, so one has to click
and choose. I recently added the Onearth satellite images, link code "O",
which has pretty good - but not as good as the best of the Google's - images
of the whole world.

This was done in a rush, so the column headers don't quite line up any more
in the contol point listings...

Going to be the same thing this year, too, except this year, we take

Resolution is pretty lousy. It's a lot greener here in SC than the

Gosh one half of that is crap resolution, the other half is great.

I don't know what the resolution of these pics are, but they're showing
up 1m chord glider wings pretty well.

I suspect the google maps are using the same database as the keyhole
software - which in itself is pretty cool and they offer a free 7 day
trial. The issue is that most of the US is low resolution and only
major "metro" areas are very high resolution.

Resolution not so great, but Williams Soaring Center (run by Rex and
Noelle Mayes) is adjacent to the rectangular dirt field in upper left
quadrant of the image. They were forced out of Lagoon Valley a decade
or so ago, due to the "imminent" start of construction on an office park
(which never happened). They then moved 10 miles north on I80 to the
former Vaca-Dixon airport, but were chased out within a year due to
noise complaints. Next they bought Williams Airport (about 45 miles
north of Sacramento on I5), and have been there since. Now, if the
satellite photo was a bit more recent, it would show housing
developments in the large green fields to the west and southwest of the
airport, another move is likely within a year or two...

Interesting. I used to fly Citabrias out of Vaca-Dixon; I mainly
remember a short strip with I-80 at one end (short final over a semi is
fun!) and trees/powerlines at the other. Must have been sporting
towing gliders out of there!

They did manage to get the power lines moved underground for a 100 foot
stretch at the end of the runway, but it was still an "exciting" place
to fly...
