Try flying without pants ... it’s liberating.

Don't know the model number but they have regular pockets, cargo pockets
with velcro closures, and hip pockets with zippers.* They also have zip
off legs to convert to shorts.* Very thin material and they dry quickly
when gotten wet.

I use an old version of these pants by Duluth trading co. I have 2 shorts version and 2 pants version. The ones I have wear great, are tough as nails, don't keep a stain, dry fast, but are not the lightest clothes. I attached links to the new version and if I was to buy one today, I'd try the convertible model. The thing I like it the the cargo pockets have a zipper down the front that provides access while sitting and works great in the glider. The older version also has a front zipped pocket that I use for my billfold and is very secure.

After searching for these, I decided to buy the convertible and a pair of shorts.

Costco used to sell a similar pant. Very light-weight, and not very warm. But lots of pockets, and legs that zip off to make shorts. A lot cheaper too.

All sorts of very tender stuff freezes at 18K ft, that's what's wrong. Or even 17,999. Ask me how I know.

PS. I once froze my wife on a high-altitude flight in the late fall, and had to try to hold her tight with my whole body post-flight to keep her from going completely hypothermic. I thought it was very romantic. She did not.

One comment on Duluth Trading clothing. Yes, their stuff is pricey but they have the best quality, longest wearing, pants I have found.

The appeals court of the Moriarty district has ruled that your comments were taken out of context and are not valid in a court of law. Pffffft.

IMHO the light weight pants like the ones from Columbia and other sources are nice but 1) not very warm at higher altitudes and 2) if I have to bail out and find myself falling through trees, or bouncing along the ground, won't provide much protection. My $0.02.

I've had a pair of the Duluth dry on the fly shorts for years, I'd recommend them. Multiple good sized pockets, comfortable, and the cargo pocket with side zippers are easy to access in flight.

Dress to egress. If you have to step out of your glider over the mountains you will in short order wished you have given thought on how to dress.

Cargo pants are like the Ray Ban case on the belt. Darn convenient but only used by “Mature” men.

I love the Sahara Roll-up pants from REI. They have zippered cargo pockets on both sides. I keep essentials in them that I would not want to not lose in a bail-out. They also have these neat waist cinches that make a belt unnecessary. When it's hot on the ground, I roll up the legs to below my knees, and I roll them down before takeoff.

https://www.rei.com/product/158172/rei-co-op-sahara-roll-up-pants-mens

I have some of the Colombia cargo pants that are similar, but inferior. Only one of the side pockets is zippered; the other has a tiny piece of velcro that would blow right open in a bail out. The lower legs unzip, but I find that much less convenient than rolling them up.

Roll-up is a good idea.* I was thinking that throwing all style (decorum) aside, pant legs that had a zipper running up the *front* of the legs would provide a lot of flexibility.

I've been wearing these for soaring and towing. Like ‘em. Not convertible. Mine have 10 pockets, including the three on each thigh. One keeps a cell phone perfectly. To keep bugs and stuff out at a field, use blousing bands, if you don't care about looking extra dorky.

I am considering changing over to wearing my flight suit for my western/mountain flying next season. Lots of zippered pockets that won’t lose stuff in a bailout. Consider surplus if you can find it. Back in my flight test days, the company would issue me one for each test program, but they never had my size. I found one long ago at a surplus store that fit perfectly. $20 if I recall correctly, it was a steal.

Cheers,

And my favorite drink after towing or flying sailplanes is Rum and Coke with a twist or two of lime. Preferably Ron Matusalem. Gran Reserve 18 year or Frigate 10 year old.

A couple of years ago I saw someone walking around the flightline at the Seniors wearing a utility kilt. Not sure if he flew with it on, but it's a brilliant solution for soaring in the Florida heat and simplifies the inflight relief setup.
