Hi everybody,
In just 8 months the most beautiful jet fighter in the world will end its
operational cereer:
The Saab Viggen.
F21 at Lulea still operates the Viggen in two recce variants and an
electronic warfare version. On 5 - 6 April I had the chance to make a
comprehensive photographic report of this fantastic aircraft. Check
http://www.dappa.nl/lulea.htm is you like to see all photos of this Nordic
Dinosaur !
Have fun,
Iwan

Good photography of a handsome airplane...
The reality is that if they ever had to go to war it would have been
against the Soviets, and the Viggens would have been swept from the sky
in an eyeblink by dozens of Soviet fighters coming at each of them...
The best part is that war did not happen and these birds were able to
fly for decades in peace...

Nice! Funny how such highly engineered stuff can be so visually
graceful. Pilots' version of the Sistine Chapel.
FWIW, I kind of enjoyed the crash stuff

Excellent photos of the plane. Brings back memories of making plastic
models as a kid, I'm sure one was the Viggen. No, I didn't paint the
splinter camo.

I loved the Viggen when I was a kid - I still remember making and painting
Viggen models. At the time I was very curious about the 'circular hole'
around the engine tail cone - I never figured it out. Can anyone help me
understand what it did, and if it worked, why other aircraft do not have it.
Thanks,
Hilton

Hi Hilton,
The engine ends in front of the the "circular hole". Just behind the hole
are three triangular shapes metal shields that can fully close off the main
exhaust pipe, forcing the thrust bach forward through the "circular hole".
This must have been one of the earliest versions of a thrust reverser.
Actually the Viggen can back up into a revetment of parking spot by using
this method. Looks great during demonstration flights (or should I say
demonstration rides).
Cheers,
Iwan
