View Full Version : Glue for bows?

I'm trying to figure out which glue to use for wingtip bow laminating. I've
been using aerolite up to this point for my woodwork, bu tI'm told this is
unsuitable for bows due to it's fast setting time. I'm thinking T88, but am
open to suggestions. naturally it has to be strong, but I also ned it to be
relatively easy to work when i'm laminating (first time to try this, so
i'll need time) and it has to be workable when i'm shaping the lamination
when it's cured.

suggestions?

Can't go wrong with T-88!

T88 should be good especially if low temperature is a problem.

I used a FGI epoxy R-180 which is similar to West System.

The laminations are 2mm thick by about 30mm wide and the whole bow is
about 1200mm wide by 300mm high. I can't remember how much I allowed
for spring-back, but I could probably find out.

Plenty of working time provided you have all the bits cut and ready
to go before you mix the glue (a practice run doesn't hurt either).

If you glue the strips on a form, there should be very little springback.

that's waht I thought. I've only done one lamination before (it didn't go
well) and it had a fairly severe curve at one point and in spite of my poor
clamping, it pretty much stayed the shape of the mold.

For many MANY years we have used resorcinal resin. Urea resin works well
also but it isn't quite as durable. Used both of them for water skis fifty
years ago and they still work. The skis too! :-)
