A colleague today was describing a movie from "10-15 years ago", which included a guy in the belly turret of a
WWII bomber whose landing gear had been shot off. His harness is also stuck. Being an artist, he draws a
drawing of the landing gear, and the the plane lands on the "animated" landing gear.

Can anybody here ID this? Wizard of Draws maybe? :)

That was the "The Mission". Not a movie, but the pilot episode of Steven
Spielberg's "Amazing Stories".

And as they haul him out the "animated" gear goes flat. Would you
call this an early attempt at anime?

Not a theatrical motion picture, but an episode of Steven Spielberg's
short-lived television series "Amazing Stories." Titled "The Mission,"
it was one of only two episodes actually directed by Spielberg.
See http://www.spielbergfilms.com/amazingstoriesmission.html
Original air date November 3, 1985, so almost 20 years ago.

The Internet knows all....

I see that the answer is 'The Mission'. I saw it, but for some reason,
I keep thinking it is, 'Memphis Belle.'

Definitely not "Memphis Belle", but it does have a scene where the ball-turret
gets shot off the airplane and the gunner is just handing by his safety
strap. And there is the obligatory drama of manually cranking down
the gear just in time to land.

Did some Google-ing on Memphis Belle and ran across this site:

Seems there is something of a p*ssing contest over her ...

Also, it was interesting to read that Col Morgan flew in the Pacific too ...
lost a B29 off Kwajelen.

Found this brief capsule of the Memphis Belle's war record:

http://www.memphis-belle.com/belle_story.htm

Interesting at the bottom ... a couple of more crew who did not fly all 25
on board the MB.

I remember it as the Memphis Belle also but a different movie than the
docudrama.

"Amazing Stories", by Spielburg. Was a TV series in the '80s.

I remember watching that one with my grandfather. After the show he told me
how when they were coming back from bombing Gdynia, Poland, their gear was
out and his friend Jim Holt was stuck in the ball. (96th BG, 337th Sqd,
Sept '43)

Talked about how they managed to crank him loose as they came over the wash
and made a belly landing on the base. No sooner did they get out of the
plane...had just barely dropped their harnesses...an officer told them to
pose in front of a different airplane for a crew photo which angered all of
them. I still have the photo. Compared with a previous photo, it's
abundantly clear they'd had a rough day.

His response to the TV show was along the lines of "wouldn't that be nice?"
Also, the waist was much wider than IRL.
