Welding equipment advise

I am gathering the things I need to start building.
Does anyone here have any experience with the portable oxy acetylene setups?

Is the typical 20ft^3 Oxygen and 10 ft^3 acetylene configuration too small
to be useful when building a fuselage/struts?
How many times will you typically have to refill during the building process
with these smaller tanks?

Depends on how much practice you do before you start on the fuselage. You
could definitely build a whole fuselage of a Pitts with that acetylene tank
alone and maybe one or two oxy refills.

No help with the tanks, but you can type the "³" by holding ALT while you
key in 0179 using the number pad.

I'm nearly finished with the welding of a Dyke Delta. You can see
pictures at http://www.ernest.isa-geek.org If your only going to build
one airplane at a time, I can tell you straight up that you want to get
the smallest bottles you can find. The ability to move it around
without grunting easily trumps the few trips you'll make to the welding
shop (someplace you'll want to go anyhow...at least when the wife's not
looking 8*) Except for a few thick pieces, most of the tube is so thin
that your flame resembles what can be had from a Bic lighter (I'm
exagerating, but not a whole helluva lot). I keep looking at that
little set that Harbor Freight has with the little plastic carrying case.


Also, get the lightest hose you can find. It won't alwsays be
convienent to put the fuselage in the perfect position, meaning you have
to support the weight of that hose in and awkward position. Always try
to avoid that, but the lighter hose is a godsend when you can't.
