OSH to get new control tower

Got a mailing from the FAA this week requesting comments on a proposed,
new, non-fed control tower to be built at OSH.
Airspace Case No.: 05-AGL-8-NR
The proposed new tower is to be 146 feet AGL/948 feet MSL to be located
at these coordinates: N 43-58-54.05, W 88-33-47.28. (Anyone have a topo
that can tell us where on the field that will be?)
Deadline for comments is 27 June 2005.

By eyeball, that's pretty close to where the existing tower is. DGB

It was my understanding that it's going to be about two blocks farther
west than where the current tower is (and taller)

That's interesting that there sending out this mailing - they broke
ground during Airventure last year, my understanding it should almost
be completed by now.

Seems a kind of far back from the runway.

Looking at that photo, it looks like its the area where the "nursing
hangar" is, if memory serves, along with emergency services? What kind
of "security zone" are they going to put around it then? close off the
street? make zoom move his trailer? :)

Actually, it's further back than that I think. But remember there
are more runways than 18-36 at OSH (in addition to 9-27, there are
two diagonals that are NOT used during AirVenture). Also remember
that the runways themselves aren't the whole problem, ground control
seeing the movement area is also a problem

It has to be farther back because of the increase in height and
protection of the airspace surfaces. Specifically, a 7:1 transition area
slope from the runway centerline. For every one-foot vertical, you have
to move seven-feet horizontally from the reference. 148*7=1036 feet from
the centerline (minimum). This is all spelled out in TERPS.

Not entirely true. We are getting a new tower here at BIL. It is 40
something feet taller than our current one. It is also only a few
hundred feet off the centerline of one of the runways, much closer than
before.
