Just curious, but who would go through the trouble to put an ADF in an
airplane these days? I wouldn't. Are they even still used? Maybe for
listening to the ball game...

they are surprisingly useless. the great advantage is/was that they
could point to a simple am band transmitter.
we did a flight across australia in January in a grumman equipped with
a full old style IFR panel so I had a number of days to experiment
with the ADF.
there were times that I could physically see the transmitter tower but
could not pick up enough of a signal to listen to the am radio
enroute.
at other times with the volume turned right up and to hell with the
hiss we would be able to listen to music for only about 30 miles as we
passed a transmitter.
I had always considered picking up and installing an old one in my
aircraft for listening to radio across australia but I'm happy now to
scrub the idea and think more toward a cd player.

they're destined for scrap or museums methinks.
